White Lilies by Peder, Anne Trolle 🎵
Gold Gown by Fortuny Sold by Augusta Auctions
The pleated silks created by Mariano Fortuny in the 1920s and 1930s remain a mystery so far as I have read. Today, you can find polyesters pleated like this, but not silks as keeping them closely pleated remains a challenge. You can see how the pleating would allow a woman’s curves enough space, while keeping close to the body.
The very simple silhouette is all that is needed with golden silk. The neckline is relatively high and the gown sweeps along the floor, so only the arms are bare. A simple stenciled cotton belt pulls it close to the waist, then Murano beads decorate the side seams and the edges of the sleeve openings. The beads seem to close the gown, but really they are decoration. It is a look reminiscent of classical Mediterranean cultures. It may date to the 1920s when the rest of fashion was going crazy over tube-like dresses with short skirts or to the 1930s when the waist returned to its natural location. But this dress seems to defy any particular age.
Someone bought this from a Madison Avenue shop and then Augusta Auctions sold it for over $10,000 at auctions. And I am thinking it wasn’t overpriced.
