This pair of ruffly knickers with this fun “Tessellate” pattern from Silk Laundry recently caught my eye. Hopefully you can see in the company’s photo of the fabric used in loungewear that it’s not a simple checkerboard pattern. It’s actually distorted in a playful, wavy manner.
This pure silk knicker is a pretty simple piece. The edges are finished with serged seams with two parallel elastics creating the ruching, ruffly look. I’ll just note here that the elastic used in the knicker I received is white, whereas in the product photo from Silk Laundry, it is black. Also, as you can see from my interior photo, the gusset is lined in the same silk material and this has been finished with French seams.
I ordered an M and it fits perfectly with a low rise and a cheeky cut at the back. The material feels fantastic against one’s skin.
I bought these knickers at SSENSE’s summer sale, for only $33. The price has since dropped to $29 from the regular retail price of $55. SSENSE also carries this piece in a pastel yellow and regular black. Those knickers are also on sale along with a number of ruched bras, slip dresses and other pieces.
Fabrics: 100% silk. I also want to add that the piece came in a bag that I thought was plastic but in fact, is totally compostable, which is amazing.

More ruffly knickers ♡
Silk Laundry is a company specializing in silk clothes that operates in Montreal and Australia. Its 90s silk dresses are a perennial favourite of fashion editors. As any fashion lover knows, staple items like the crisp white shirt or LBD seem so simple, but the pattern, cut, drape, and material can make such a huge difference. While the silk slip is more forgiving than an oxford shirt or form fitting dress, the same factors apply.
I’ve been living in slinky slips this pandemic and there’s nothing easier than throwing on a blazer over a slip for an easy professional look while working from home. So when I saw this classic Leopard print Short 90s Slip Dress and an offer for free shipping, I snapped it up. I’m so glad I did because I’m very pleased with it.
The first thing one notices is the quality of the silk. There are different grades of silk and this slip has the smoothest, most buttery feel of my slips, including 100% silk slips from Natori and Alexander Wang. Cut on the bias, it has a fantastic drape and is ultra comfortable. I love the cut of the back which dips into a V shape, as well as the subtle flaring of the skirt at the bottom which gives the piece more movement. The piece also features French seams and metallic hardware.
The fit of the piece is forgiving but also tricky. Be forewarned that the website’s measurements are very inaccurate! I emailed customer service and they confirmed the size chart was way off. Currently, the website states the XS is 98cm at the bust. (The bust is the most important measurement because the piece more or less flares out from there because the drape of the fabric will gently flow over your curves.) 98cm seemed very large to me, so I emailed a Customer Service rep who measured the piece reported it to be 35.36cm. I’m not sure how she measured the piece, but laid flat, the XS piece I have measures just over 39 cm, or 78.5cm all around.
I’m normally a size 4/S and I took a chance on the XS because they were sold out of the S. It fits easily, drapes nicely and there’s still a little extra room but not much. I can see how more fabric with the S would have given the piece more fluidity and movement on me, closer to the model’s photo. But the XS is not in any way tight, restricting or unflattering and less fabric will make it easier for me to tuck it into bottoms and style it as a camisole top.
I purchased this piece for $120 from the Silk Laundry website. You cannot go wrong with the Archives collection which allows you to purchase past seasons at discounted prices and honestly, these pieces are all pretty timeless which falls in line with the company’s attention to slower, more mindful fashion. When considering a comparable polyester slip from Aritzia is $98 and a silk piece like this can easily run you over $200, the $120 price point is a steal. In addition, Silk Laundry ships from Montreal so Canadians don’t need to worry about duties and taxes. I find the shipping from Montreal to Toronto to be incredibly fast. I can reliably receive an SSENSE order in under 48h with Canada Post. With Silk Laundry, my order took one day to be shipped and four days in transit including a weekend, to arrive.

Styling a silk slip
I picked up another solid colour silk slip from Silk Laundry, this time in bronze. I find the quality of their silk and the bias-cut drape of their slips to be really excellent. They are my go-to lounge wear, supremely comfortable, more so than sweats, yet also glamourous.
I bought this piece to wear out as well and thought I'd share some styling ideas instead of my typical review. The silk slip is a great starting place to experiment because it's like a blank canvas. Its luxurious simplicity makes it so easy to work with. You can dress it up or down. You can incorporate it into a variety of moods. Here, I'm going to visit three common slip dress looks but give them a little twist.
Pairing a slip dress with a fur stole, stilettos, clutch and jewelry is pretty standard but it's also very predictable. Here, I've taken advantage of the simplicity of the slip and neutral chocolate brown stole to introduce an unusual statement gold headpiece by Agent Provocateur and other accessories to support its drama, a classic gold snakeskin knuckle duster clutch by Alexander McQueen, matching burnt bronze snakeskin heels by Tom Ford, and an antique snake armband. Each supporting piece is interesting but not to the point where they detract from the head piece. Simple but memorable. Such an opulent yet sleek look could also contrast well with the overblown romanticism of Kurkdjian's Absolue Pour Le Soir.
A slip dress with a white t-shirt and Doc Martens is very 90s. Here I've updated and elevated this classic grunge look with a Parisian striped mockneck tee, leather driving gloves with gold chain detailing, a sage Chloe purse with a touch of that French boho vibe, a matching green, black and white scarf by Hermes which you could tie to the purse or style with your hair, and a McQueen earcuff to polish off this elegant bad girl vibe. I like the bronze and green colour scheme because it feels "natural" but you could swap the greens out for a different colour, like a pale orchid and fuschia. I'd also swap out the 90's CK One for Etat Libre's smoky, sheer jasmine, which I think makes for a perfect finishing touch to this edgy feminine outfit.
A slip dress, cozy sweater and neutral suede boots make for a lovely, simple autumnal trio. But I thought we could have more fun with it by choosing this matching mohair sweater by Marni which adds more texture and pops of colour for contrast. The accessories build around the sweater with a lavender wool Ganni beret, two-toned crystal ring and asymmetrical earrings by Justine Clenquet and just one mauve crocodile moto glove since we'll need the other hand bare for the ring. The pieces are all just a little bit different in colour from the sweater so the look remains dynamic and not too matchy-matchy. We close this eclectic magpie outfit with ivory wide-leg kitten heel boots from ba&sh and this quirky bright yellow "Do Not Disturb" tote by PZtoday which looks small in this pic but is actually massive! An off kilter look like this would pair well with an unusual perfume like the strangely sweet, earthy, and spicy Rouge by CdG.
