in my mind gender is like this:
I’m no gender expert, so this probably says more about me than anyone else.
I feel the same about sexuality.
it just makes more sense to me that most of us are somewhere in the middle… rather than at either extreme.
Now if we were to plot gender and gender expression… that could be a cool plot… a beautiful spiral galaxy scatter plot.
fig. 1) a selection of common inputs and outputs of the lolita/egl alternative fashion subculture. sample population consists of western (primarily N. American and European), primarily white/white-passing, primarily cis female/femme-identifying subjects. these observations are inexhaustive, and are based on several years of anecdotal observation by a single researcher.
[a top-down ms paint flowchart describing different people who get involved with egl/lolita fashion, both before and after their immersion in the subculture. inputs: "weeb," "other alt fashion participant (ie goth, punk, retro)," and "oh what's this this looks kind of fun let me try it." each input is in a box, with an arrow pointing down towards a central box labeled "lolita" in a cursive font. four arrows emerge from the "lolita" box, pointing down towards four separately boxed outputs. outputs: "that was fun but eh not my thing anymore nbd hobbies and interests change throughout a lifetime," "drag," "tradwife pipeline," and "enby/transmasc."]
So I'm at 15,794 words, which I'm proud of. Over 15000 words in less then 10 days is something to be proud of.
Thing is, I keep having to remember I'm writing a romance novel not just a character study of these two characters. I'm also very grateful I wrote up a 1000 word outline, so I have something to look at and realign. Because I'm getting lost in details like "where are my characters driving and how long would it take to get there" or "where's a damn pharmacy?!?!" And while those are important details, they aren't exactly important to telling the story.
The point is these two characters are falling in love. So I keep having to remind myself, "remember, they are falling in love" because that's important.
And because I'll be remembering it randomly, it starts looking like this(picture attached)
And while that can get flattened out in the edit, I'm not wanting it to be like this because that is much more a romance subplot rather then a full romance plot(picture attached)
So the goal is to not be a boring logarithmic like, but also not a weird square root of a cotangential curve that I've got now. What I'm wanting to do more is a strange curve. (picture attached)
This is, I can't imagine actually writing something like this. Because that would be a novel of such overwhelming intensity. That being said, sounds fun.
So that's where I am with my novel. I know I am not far into it, I'm at a decent point, I just need to solidify my external conflict, and make that internal conflict so much more prominent. Like they have a bit of it right now, my main characters are having a bad time, but it could be worse for them. So now I just need to make it worse!😁
