My entry for the Team Gondolin Spirit Challenge. Excuse my thumb - the map of Middle Earth in the background is a poster on my wall and I wasn't about to take it down just to serve as a horizontal rather than vertical backdrop, it's been through enough abuse as it is (the shiny parts you can see are where I had to repair it with packing tape because it was torn).

Anyway! Here's the symbol of Idril Celebrindal hanging out with my copy of Silm, and my parent's copy, which also happens to be the from the first print run of the First American Edition - its dustcover has sadly been lost over the years.

(I wish I could say when and where I got my copy of Silm, but I honestly cannot for the life of me remember. It is a mystery.)

...This is like when you're reading a reference book or paper and the author refers really briefly to one of their sources without quoting it and you're like "no hang on I want to read more about that" Also I'm trying to imagine if "The Fall of Gondolin" is supposed to be another tome or scroll or whatever and like... is it included in the library of Rivendell?

Like, I know I was afraid of the feels but in the end all I get about Ecthelion is that he and Gothmog slew each other in the square of the king, and that Glorfindel and the Balrog both fell off a cliff and then the eagles brought Goldilocks' body back up to be buried.

And there's NOTHING about what happened to Turgon, except as an afterthought to explain that Gil Galad is the high king now.

(Also I'm pretty sure whatever elf was telling this particular tale to Bilbo, has a bit of a crush on Glorfindel. Glorfindel the beloved??? Really???)

Tl;dr - I really don't know what kind of feels I was afraid I'd have. The fanfics I've been reading explore this whole thing in such a more detailed and poignant way.

Also, the last time I read this, I imagined Glorfindel's battle with the balrog a little differently, like they were at the top of a mountain and then fell rather than in a mountain pass? I don't know how to explain it, I also don't remember super clearly.

Also also also, Tuor is a sweetheart. And part of me wonders what would have happened if he and Voronwe had said something to Turin as they saw him pass...

Maeglin was no weakling or craven, but the torment wherewith he was threatened cowed his spirit, and he purchased his life and freedom by revealing to Morgoth the very place of Gondolin and the ways whereby it might be found and assailed.

Oh Maeglin Honey no. (Although I'm curious as to what torture he was threatened with that it would cow his spirit so despite him being neither weakling nor craven)

Oh nooo Nimloth is a kinswoman to Celeborn? So not only is Elrond related to Galadriel by way of her being Thingol's niece (and Thingol being Luthien's dad and Luthien being Dior's mom blah blah blah), but he's related to Celeborn by way of Nimloth and Celeborn being some sort of related, potentially. The freaking line of the Peredhil is just FULL of distant-cousins getting married.

So according to the elf narrators of Silm...

The dwarves' reasoning for not giving Thingol the rebuilt Nauglamir is just a flimsy excuse to steal the Silmaril from him.

Which, Okay, if they really didn't think Thingol deserved the Nauglamir they should have told him that before they agreed to remake it.

But "hey screw you this was made for Finrod Friendlygund and he's dead now and Hurin killed a dude in order to take this from Nargothrond and give it to you that's a sketchy reason for you to think you have claim over it" is actually pretty sound logic.

Like really, since Finrod didn't leave behind an heir (okay he kind of left behind Orodreth but Orodreth is dead now too) then if the Nauglamir is to stay with elves, shouldn't it go to Finrod's next-of-kin? And wouldn't that be... Galadriel?

Basically someone draw me Galadriel wearing the Nauglamir, ok???
