A (re)introduction

Hey, since I'm back on this site, and I've changed a lot in the 7 years or so since I last posted here, here's a bit of a new about-me.

Hi, I'm Dee. I'm in my mid-30s, white, Canadian, and a longtime resident of the internet. I'm nonbinary (I prefer no pronouns but am also okay with they/them), ace-spec, aro-spec, and neurodivergent (officially diagnosed ADHD, self-assessed as having a lot of autistic traits as well but not pursuing an official diagnosis at this time - please note I'm absolutely pro self-diagnosis so don't take my careful wording as anything other than how i personally describe myself).

I'm a fan of a number of things; my longest-term fandom is Tolkien's works. I like tabletop games, especially D&D, but haven't played in a while. I've played runescape off-and-on since about 2007, and watched minecraft content and played minecraft off and on in bits and pieces since the full release of Java edition. Currently I've gotten back into hermitcraft in season 10 after mostly only watching occasionally from seasons 6-9 and more heavily during seasons 4 and 5.

I'm a bit of a nerd about languages/linguistics. I have a degree in theatre and experience as a Stage Manager, but have been shifting a bit more toward hybrid and digital performance, as well as examining what informs the creative decisions that go into creating successful hybrid and digital performance, and also how to make theatre a more accessible art form.

if you actually want to improve, you need to be able to take good-faith criticism from those close to you without making it a chore for them.

it's hard, especially if most the "criticism" you've had in your life was actually excuses to demean you or otherwise acts of anger

but if you really think you have room to improve on things (and everyone does!) then you've got to be able to take a complaint from a friend without treating it as a declaration that person hates you or without wallowing in your self-hatred in a way that makes them feel guilty for ever bringing it up

if those close to you bring a problem to your attention respectfully, it's because they care enough about the relationship and you to want to see you change that behavior instead of, say, just cutting you out of their life. you don't have to change just because they asked you to, you still shouldn't make them regret asking.

bestie boo, let me fill you in on something: if you're going to take any part of 'good grammar' and randomly assign it to She's A Witch! AI, you might as well give up. It's over. You're cooked. Anyone who has spent the last decade or more learning to type properly, anyone who has spent any time writing articles/papers/essays that require you to use 'good grammar' is going to fall into that 'oh no it might be AI' trap.

Stop hunting like it's 1692. You're not going to find Goody Proctor at the ChatGPT sacrament. What you're going to do is exactly what happened back then: harming people who've done nothing wrong.

Using an Oxford comma isn't a sign of AI.

Skipping an Oxford comma is probably a sign of human writing, because as I discovered when making the mistake of googling oxford comma on my work laptop that doesn't have AI overview turned off, at least some GenAI engines aren't actually able to generate a list without an Oxford comma (as evidenced by the alleged examples of lists without Oxford commas, which still included Oxford commas).

But plenty of humans, myself included, are staunchly pro-Oxford comma, so its presence doesn't hint toward anything, only its absence does.

the way trans folks innocuous jokes get misinterpreted and turned into discourse should be studied. a while back i remember seeing jokes like "if you know my deadname no you dont" or "closing my eyes when sending my trans friend money so I dont read their deadname" well some folks must have seen those jokes and thought "ohh its transphobic to know someone's deadname" and thats why this year i saw someone in an argument say "why would you, as their partner, know their deadname? 🤨" huh??

I try not to fall into the "I never liked their work anyway" ditch when an artist/creator reveals themself to be a terrible person

BUT

a feeling I do have and will stand by is "While I enjoyed their work overall I did have some gripes that I overlooked out of affection and whimsy, but now that my loyalty is gone and my affection tainted there is nothing holding me back from enumerating my many grievances, to which the revelations of the creator's shittiness may or may not provide a new and infuriating context."
