Summary:

The entire left side of his face felt like burning, and he could ignore it only because the eye hurt so much worse than everything else. "Where," he rasped. "Where am I?"

"You're in my home," the woman told him. "I am Ximena Talis. My son found you washed up on the riverbank, almost dead, so we brought you back here to care for you."

An AU in which, after Silco escapes from Vander's attempted murder, he's washed down the Pilt and ends up on the riverbank, not far from where Ximena and Jayce Talis live...

"The Last Drop," she repeated. "That's the bar I was talking about." Frost was climbing up Silco's spine, forcing itself into his every pore. "And his name is--

"Vander," Silco supplied.

Ximena frowned. "You know him?"

Silco had thought he knew Vander, but not well enough. "He was-- It-- We were--" He couldn't seem to push the words out of his mouth.

Ximena, thank all the gods, caught it immediately. She sat up to stare down at him in horror. "Van," she said, and it came out remarkably gently considering the pure rage in her eyes. "You told me his name was Van, and I didn't realize... Mi corazón, I am so sorry, I will find another venue, of course." She threw back the covers and swung her legs over the edge of the bed.

Silco reached out and hooked an arm around her waist to keep her from getting up. "What are you doing?"

"I can make it to the Lanes just about when the bar closes," she said fiercely, "and he will never expect me."
