Advances in stretchable semiconductors, integrated electronics

Researchers from the University of Houston have reported significant advances in stretchable electronics, moving the field closer to commercialization.

In a paper published Friday, Feb. 1, in Science Advances, they outlined advances in creating stretchable rubbery semiconductors, including rubbery integrated electronics, logic circuits and arrayed sensory skins fully based on rubber materials.

Cunjiang Yu, Bill D. Cook Assistant Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston and corresponding author on the paper, said the work could lead to important advances in smart devices such as robotic skins, implantable bioelectronics and human-machine interfaces.

Yu previously reported a breakthrough in semiconductors with instilled mechanical stretchability, much like a rubber band, in 2017.

This work, he said, takes the concept further with improved carrier mobility and integrated electronics.

Strong carbon fiber artificial muscles can lift 12,600 times their own weight

The pull-up, an exercise dreaded by most, answers a basic question: are your muscles strong enough to lift your own body weight?

Some Illinois researchers working on artificial muscles are seeing results even the fittest individuals would envy, designing muscles capable of lifting up to 12,600 times their own weight.

Assistant professor of mechanical science and engineering Sameh Tawfick, Beckman postdoctoral fellow Caterina Lamuta, and Simon Messelot recently published a study on how to design super strong artificial muscles in the journal Smart Materials and Structures. The new muscles are made from carbon fiber-reinforced siloxane rubber and have a coiled geometry.

These muscles are capable of not only lifting up to 12,600 times their own weight, but also supporting up to 60 MPa of mechanical stress, providing tensile strokes higher than 25% and specific work of up to 758 J/kg. This amount is 18 times more than the specific work natural muscles are capable of producing. When electrically actuated, the carbon fiber-based artificial muscles show excellent performance without requiring a high input voltage: the authors showed how a 0.4 mm diameter muscle bundle is able to lift half a gallon of water by 1.4 inches with only 0.172 V/cm applied voltage.

Development of technique for one-pot synthesis of siloxane bonds

AIST has developed a one-pot synthesis technique that selectively forms siloxane bonds which form the main skeleton of organosilicon materials, in order to synthesize structurally well-defined siloxane compounds in one process.

With the developed technique for one-pot synthesis of siloxane bonds (synthesis in which multiple reactions are made to occur in succession in the same reactor vessel), it is possible to synthesize siloxane compounds with a structure corresponding to the order in which dihydrosilanes (or trihydrosilanes) are added to the reactor vessel. In principle, by-products are not produced, or they can be easily separated because they are gases at room temperature and pressure. With the developed technique, it is possible to greatly reduce processes such as isolation and purification of products and washing of reactor vessels after each reaction.

In recent years, demand for higher performance and higher functionality of organosilicon materials such as silicone has increased, and there is a need for techniques capable of precisely controlling the structure of organosilicon materials. Although there are techniques capable of selectively forming one type of siloxane bond, such as the cross-condensation method, multistage synthesis has been necessary in order to obtain complex siloxane compounds, and there is the issue of by-product remaining as well. In the present research, the researchers have worked on the development of a new technique for precise formation of siloxane bonds with a different approach from the conventional methods.
