That is one thing living in a standalone dwelling does have in its favor - I know where to go to shut off water to the entire house if I have to. On the other hand, I have NO FUCKING IDEA where the on/off valve for the sprinkler system is, but I know it won't work, because the cheap PVC exterior pipe for it the previous owner installed more or less exploded the first time it froze.
Well, that’s kind of what I’m looking at in the sense of...the valve in my bathroom shuts off water to the whole-ass unit, much like your Whole House shutoff, but if that was busted you’d probably have to call the city, right? Like, if your Whole Ass House shutoff valve wouldn’t shut the water off, I don’t even know...presumably there’s some kind of further-down-the-line shutoff but would you have to dig it up?
I do miss living in a detached house sometimes...I’d like to have a front yard, a backyard garden, a garage -- but also I know I’m not really...cut out for houses. When I’m alone in one I feel weirdly vulnerable, and the trade off of having a yard isn’t quite worth having to drive a car to work. :D

I feel like he should have checked the shut off for the floor to make sure it isn’t broken as well.
I suppose on Tuesday we’ll find out :D I mean if it is, even better, we’ve now stopped TWO water disasters before they happen, but my neighbors are gonna be really big mad if we have to shut off the water to the whole building.

but how many other units are like this, I wonder?
Lord, I hope not many. It’s an older building and some units haven’t been rehabbed very recently, but also I think like...the person who lived here before me was uh, memorably dysfunctional about her living space, and she might have sabotaged it on purpose. I’m pretty sure she sabotaged the thermostat and she definitely put the giant hole in the wall.

i think the next step is the whole building, followed by the nearest water main. uh. hopefully it doesn't get that far.
I mean, we also have a river close enough to smell most days...could get problematic :D

This makes me feel better -- my mom is experiencing the same situation, only her problem is with the electricity half of the new-dishwasher-installation problem. (Her new one is also sitting in her living room.) I told her if worse comes to worse, we'll throw a sheet over the new one and use it as the stand for the holiday nativity set
I have already used the box my new dishwasher sits in as a desk, temporary stand for a piece of furniture I was building, and blanket storage. It’s turning out to be very useful, I might need to replace it with a table when it finally goes in.
