The Mothman legend originated in Point Pleasant when a couple saw this creature while they were driving home at night. The creature was sighted between November 1966 and December 1967 and has been attributed to the cause of the Silver Bridge Collapse on December 15th , 1967 resulting in the death of 46 people. Since the bridge collapse there has been no further sightings of this creature.

Mothman

Mothman, a pretty popular cryptid as of recently. I’m here to tell you all the nitty gritty details of how Mothman came to be the cryptid we know today.

The First Sighting It all started in Clendenin, West Virginia, November 12, 1966 when 5 men were digging at a cemetery. They all claimed to see “a man like figure fly over their heads” This is the very first sighting of what became known as Mothman.

Point Pleasant Then we go over to Point Pleasant, West Virginia. November 15, 1966 two couples were at “the TNT area” which is an old munitions plant from World War II. They said they saw “glowing red eyes” when the cars headlights flashed on it, and a man-like figure with a “10 foot wingspan”. All 4 individuals said this winged man chased them for miles, up to speeds of 100 mph. They reported this sighting to the county sheriff.  As the days went by more and more sightings were reported. Two firemen claimed to see a “large bird with red eyes”. One man (whose name I forget because I can’t find my research journal) claims Mothman carried his German Shepherd off. Which could be possible because the couple who was being chased by Mothman saw a large dog by the road. (According to one website anyways) It could have been the missing pooch though! This man went looking for his dog after hearing noises one night and said he saw “red eyes like bicycle reflectors” with his flashlight illuminating them.  The small town became a little panicked and naturally the local paper picked this story up which leads us to where Mothman got his name.

Mothmans’ Name Origins Recently Batman and Robin had come out on TV and for some reason this local newspaper thought “Hey, what if we name the creature from the sightings Mothman?” Most likely it was to bring attention to their paper by using the popularity from Batman. Why moth though, I am not sure. 

Logical Answers The county sheriff referred to it as a “shitepoke” which is a large heron from around the area. However, wildlife biologist Dr. Robert L. Smith believes that “Mothman” is just a sandhill crane. Sandhill cranes get to be around as high as a man with a 7 foot wingspan. They also have red circles around their eyes. It simply could've gotten off its migration route and come through Point Pleasant.

The Silver Bridge Collapse The Silver Bridge collapse happened on November 15, 1967. An entire year from the first sighting. 46 people died in the Silver Bridge collapse and it was simply because a single eyebar in a suspension chain had a small defect in it.  Many people said the night prior to this incident they say a large creature on top of the bridge. Some even say they had nightmares about the bridge and claim these dreams came from Mothman and was a warning. 

Conclusion   Though we do not know exactly what Mothman is we definitely can say there was something out there. Some believe he was an alien sent to warn the town. Ohers believe he was just a large bird possibly affected by the radiation from the old munitions plant. And then some say it was really a man with wings. I can’t be quite sure what to believe, but I do know Mothman is definitely real no matter what he is. 

Bonus Information Point Pleasant throws a festival every year for Mothman! They have a Mothman statue in town and a few shops too. My girlfriend said she might take me one day and I would be thrilled to go! (hint hint ;))

1933 Dam Failure in Xian, China, 1951 Earthquake in the States, 1986 Chernobyl Disaster and 1978 Freiburg Coal Mine Explosion in Germany have one thing in common; The Mothman, a humanoid creature with reflective eyes and wings, appeared just before those terrible disasters. Many testified to having seen the Mothman with frequent appearances near the sites of the accidents.

The Mothman is, according to all accounts, described as a two-meter-tall hairy monster with a terrible smell, which smells like gunpowder or sulfur. 

On November 15, 1996, the first sighting of the Mothman was reported by Roger and Linda Scarberry in Point Pleasant Village, the States, and where the couple (Roger and Linda Scaberry) saw a red-eyed bird with a ten-feet wingspan flying over their car.

Actually the couple drove up to an outside of town known as 'the TNT area', used for munitions factory during WW II.

Soon after the extraordinary chasing, the Mothman flew over toward the Silver Bridge, and the next day, the Silver Bridge collapsed while it was full of rush - hour traffic jam, resulting in the deaths of 46 peopel, and two of the victims were never found.

After this first report, the Mothman has been appearing as early warning before the notorious disasters.

By contrast with many eye-witnesses all over the world, Skeptic Joe Nickell says that a number of hoaxes followed the publicity generated by the original reports, such as a group of construction workers who tied flashlights to helium balloons. Nickell attributes the Mothman reports to pranks, misidentified planes, and sightings of a barred owl, an albino owl, suggesting that the Mothman's "glowing eyes" were actually red-eye effect caused from the reflection of light from flashlights or other bright light sources. The area lies outside the snowy owl's usual range and locals, unfamiliar with such a large owl, could have misidentified the bird.

However, as a result of which some researchers(or UFOLOGISTS/SUPERNATURAL FEVERS) made a study of  5 Sandhill Cranes' biological structures and similarities to the Mothman in detail, there was but little possibility of finding out any common denominator between the Mothman and the Sandhill Crane; small sized feature and red-colored feather.

In one day of 2007, while a Canadian man was sleeping, he awoke to find the Mothman knocking at the window, and he did dash out of the house. On dropping to the grass-plot in front of house, his house was all covered with fire soon. 

A lot of eyewitnesses’ accounts are being posted on the Internet by real-named/anonymous informants saying they bumped into the Mothman, but it is not yet known if their stories are real.

The Silver Bridge Collapse, December 15, 1967. One corroded eye in the suspension chain of eyebars and links froze and a crack propagated, and while completely loaded with Christmas traffic on that evening, the eye broke. Plummeting the bridge and all on it into the Ohio River killing 46 people.

Almost all of the current bridge inspection standards were developed after this tragedy. Many of the standards have been upgraded and added to over time as bridge technology progresses.

And no The Mothman had nothing to do with it.
