One of five silver calls (we know them later as boatswain whistle, pipe or call) recovered from the 1545 wreck of the Mary Rose. A larger version was discovered beside the body of the ship’s boatswain.
During this period, the call was worn as a badge of office by officers such as the quartermaster, all the way up to Captain.
When George Carew was created admiral of the Mary Rose the night before she sank, he was presented with a gold call, to show his high office, but this one is still missing.
