Thank you! It actually did my head in a little bit, constantly reading stuff that I knew not to be true.

I will now embark on the third part of what has become a trilogy about Back to You promo.  I think by the metrics you measure a song’s success, Back to You was a solid performer.  And I don’t think that the fandom’s characterisation is evidence based.  But what, particularly with the advantage of time, do I think of the promo as a whole?

I think while promo was going on, I was almost an inverse of lots of the rest of the fandom.  A lot of people seemed to be saying: “I hate this, therefore it’s objectively bad.”  I was much more inclined towards: “I love this, therefore it’s objectively good.” (which is not better reasoning).

There was a lots of amazing content out of Louis promo: the photoshoots, the vulnerability in the Observer article, the really interesting things Louis was saying about song-writing, the whole interview with Nick Grimshaw, the music video, and then a whole lot of other equally charming stuff (then there was extra content, which I didn’t expect anyone else to like but made me very happy, such as Louis endlessly talking class signifiers).

And I think, as a whole, it achieved its mission, Louis’ song reached an audience that liked it and continued to listen to it, on the most basic level it definitely worked.

For me, the biggest question isn’t any decisions made during Back to You promo (because we can’t know the restrictions), but whether it was a good idea at all.

One of the criticisms of the Observer article (which is not how I responded to it, but makes sense to me) is that it was missing a clear statement of purpose. He gave a lot of reasons about why he was doing what he was doing, but none of them were: “Because this is the sort of music I want to make”

I think it’s become increasingly clear since then that one reason for that was that he hadn’t fully resolved key questions about his music.  I never doubted that he had something to say - and he was quite clear that he had emotions he wanted to communicate.  But even during Back to You promo, Louis was expressing frustration at the writing process and now they seem like quite a clear indication that he hadn’t resolved some key questions about his music.

A lot of other complaints come down to the fact that promo time was competing with album time.  To flog Back to You from pillar to post (which would have been beneficial chart wise and terms of sales) would have meant putting the album on indefinite pause.

The question for me is - was it a good idea to go out and plug a single at that stage in his album development?

To put out music before an artist knows who they are is risky.  Niall had a small version of this problem when he completely redeveloped his album from when he released This Town.  Although the music he was releasing was close enough together that it didn’t matter.

I think, given everything that has happened since, I’m not sure that the risk of releasing Back to You paid off.  Louis would probably have been better off if he’d released 

We’ve seen a lot of signs of questions about his direction and struggles with his label (and management). I also suspect that he was under a lot of pressure to release music in July 2017, on the grounds that the public might forget him.  In general, I’m sure if we knew what was actually going on there’d be a lot of signs of pressure from the label.

But it’d be ordinary, mundane signs of pressure to conform that record labels are famous for.  That’s what frustrates me about the discourse around Louis.  It’s not that I think everything is great for him - I don’t.  The way record labels treat artists is notoriously terrible and I tend to think things are heaps messier behind the scenes than we know.  But I think what’s happening is more normal than an epic vendetta against him purposefully.  I think it’s a function of how music is normally made, rather than something extraordinary.
