Horror film festival makes its debut at Stanley Hotel
The first ever Stanley Film festival is happening now and for horror fans there is still time to check in, it's the checking out that you should be worried about.
The famous Stanley Hotel is the choice location for the four day independent horror film extravaganza, with guests from around the world coming to get their goosebump and adrenaline fix.
"We are fortunate to have had the town of Estes Park and the residents truly embrace our new event. Our hope is that the Stanley Film Fest can continue to bring people from around the world to this really special place in Colorado," said Jenny Bloom, festival director.
Thursday was the festival's opening night, complete with a screening of "The Purge," a film about an innocent family's survival in a society where one day a year any and all crime is legal (with live appearance by director James DeMonaco and actor Rhys Wakefield), and the Shining Gala, a cocktail party where guests drank cocktails with filmmakers and fellow horror enthusiasts.
"We are all united in our love of horror movies, and are excited to share it with welcoming audiences and our knowledge that we are at the beginning of something special," said Landon Zakheim, the festival's program director. "The Stanley Hotel has existed since 1909 where it has been scaring people for decades and decades. We hope that this ghastly location will enhance all the screams and pleasures."
It's no wonder why Stephen King chose Estes Park's Stanley Hotel for one of the most iconic horror stories ever told, "The Shining," as the hotel has seen its share of history since its opening more than a century ago. Plenty of paranormal investigators and average guests believe the hotel to be truly haunted.
"As soon as I got here, my phone started dying and my phone was locked and I went upstairs and one of the app games came on. I was kind of skeptical, but when that happened I was kind of freaked out. It's definitely haunted," said Nancy Powers, a horror fan from Oklahoma.
Other exciting events to catch are: the screening of the 1920 silent German expressionist classic, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" with live piano accompaniment; a Colorado whiskey tasting from the Hotel's "notorious collection"; and Stanley Film Festival Visionary award recipient, producer, director, screenwriter and actor, Eli Roth's (Hostel) directorial debut, "Cabin Fever" (2002); and a zombie crawl on Sunday through Estes.
"I think it's the most beautiful place I've ever been. The location is just amazing," said Aharon Keshales, co-director and writer of the Israeli film, "Big Bad Wolves," which is making its first screening since its premiere only a week ago. "So far, Stanley Film rocks."
Friday, if you're in the mood to test the spirits that roam the haunted hotel and see its startling role in "The Shining," it is being screened for free on the hotel's front lawn at 9:30 p.m. Tickets for certain individual films are available for purchase, many of them starting at $10 and a Saturday pass is available for $40.
"It's mostly the venue, the fact that they're having it at the hotel that inspired one of the better horror films ever made. And with the weather the way it is, it all fell into place. I wish them a lot of luck as an ongoing festival," said film festival enthusiast, Mike Spegoli, from Denver.
You can still get tickets to see Roth introduce a screening of the film he stars in, "Aftershock," followed by the closing night Masquerade Ball on Saturday for $35. You won't regret it... or will you?
The Estes Park Duck Race 2013 Celebrates 25 Years
The Estes Park Duck Race launchs a variety of summer activities in this charming mountain community at the east entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Many Estes area accommodations, restaurants, shops and activities are offering specials to encourage visitors to enjoy springtime in the Rockies
Ducks are dropped in Fall River at Nicky’s Resort located at 1350 Fall River Road. The race can be viewed along the way from several properties including: Aspen Winds, Inn on Fall River, Deer Crest Resort, and more (to be added). “Adopt” your race duck from an Estes Park organization, receive a duck with your lodging package or purchase one online (link here)
As the ducks reach Downtown Estes the race can be seen from many area businesses such as Riverspointe Spa.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Estes Park as a benefit for more than 67 nonprofit community organizations in the Estes Area and crowds from all over Colorado and many other states., Ducks can be “adopted” until noon on Saturday May 4th and could win one many great prizes.
Last spring, the Race raised over $100,000 for community organizations in the Estes Valley and is the largest charity fundraiser in the area. Over 95% of the money raised actually goes to benefit the participating organizations.
