writeblr intro!
Well, hello there! Welcome to my page! Thought I'd finally get around to writing and pinning an intro, seeing as my writeblr recommendations post has gone STRATOSPHERIC and I've followed so many new accounts!
I'm Jeb (he/him), 21 years old, and an aspiring writer, poet and disaster dork from New Zealand (who currently lives in the UK - England, to be more precise). I'm a huge lover of writing and reading science fiction works, particularly hard sci-fi - Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series and his novel The Songs of Distant Earth were the works that inspired a young me to start taking writing seriously. I also write fanfiction, romance, horror, a smidgen of fantasy, spy fiction... whatever takes my fancy, basically! I also love writing and reading poetry, and hope to have some of my poems published professionally by the end of 2023!
Outside of writing, I'm a huge motorsport lover. Formula One is my main passion, and in fact I originally joined tumblr to post about my then-WIP, The Edge Of Control. TEOC may be in cryogenic storage, but my love of speed and high-octane racing remains: I regularly watch F1, IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship. I also love spaceflight, astronomy, Shakespeare, teen movies from the 80s/90s (ESPECIALLY John Hughes' work), many cheesy romcoms and lasagna. (What? It's literally the perfect food!)
Right, now with all that out of the way, let's get onto the real good stuff... (sorry in advance for the lack of taglists, I haven't remembered how they work!)

works published on Tumblr:
An Acquired Taste - In a post-cyberpunk/solarpunk imagining of 22nd-century New Seoul, a corporate engineer makes a chance meeting with a street vendor and makes an important discovery.
Executive Decisions - In an alternate history where the Cold War went hot, a US Air Force nuclear-bomber crew face a moral dilemma as they near their Soviet target.
Operation Trident - A soldier experiences a combat drop on the Belgian coast, as part of an ongoing human offensive against an alien occupation force.
Ignition Sequence - An experiment with a second-person perspective where the watcher observes a Space Shuttle launch in Florida.
Just wrote an actual short story for the first time in a while! Don't know what else to say, but yay inspiration!
just a quick heads up
I won't be participating in any further tag or ask games until further notice. I don't want to sound like a dick, but these antibiotics are churning my paper-thin wisp of an immune system to shreds right now and I have a few projects on my plate. I wasn't expecting to be out of action for nearly two weeks and my deadlines have gotten a smidge sloppy. I'll slowly answer the tags and asks I've already got, but I don't want to feel as though I'm ignoring anyone - I do feel guilty that all these asks and tags have been piling up and I can't bring myself to answer them - doesn't seem fair on others. Hope everyone's having a lovely day regardless, and if you still want to chat my direct messages are always open. Thank you :)))) - Jeb
Six Sentence Sunday!
Thanks to @zonnemaagd and @writernopal for the tags!
Here's a snippet of dialogue from a piece of flash fiction I wrote for university workshop last semester, called Struck Out:
“So, these things – light used to come out of them? What did you light them with?” Anita says, wrapping her thin arm around the floodlight’s metal stem and twirling aimlessly. “People didn’t light them,” I reply from my perch on a piece of concrete sticking out of the grass. “Electricity did it for you.” “Uh-huh. Were they bright?” “Oh, yeah. When they came on, you used to be able to see them for miles. Everyone in town knew when a ballgame was on…” “Which one?” Anita replies, stepping away from the pole and sweeping her arm across the overgrown field. “Was it football? Basketball?” “Nah, basketball was usually played indoors.”
I'll tag @rbbess110, @darkfalcon233, @magicmoon65, @talesofsorrowandofruin, @tea-and-mercury and @inflarescent!
welcome back, we've got some jobs ready for you
hey hey! I took a bit of a hiatus from tumblr over the last few weeks due to mental health concerns, but this little post would like to affirm that I am (tentatively) returning to the tumblrsphere! apologies to those whose asks or tags didn't get a reply while I was away and I'll try bringing the activity back slowly as I prepare to return to uni.
Writing Habits Tag Game
Thank you to @tea-and-mercury for the tag! I write: daily | most days I a few times a week I a few times a month I random
I write most often: when I first get up | later in the morning I afternoon I evening I the wee hours of the night | whenever
In one sitting, I tend to write: a few sentences at a time I a few hundred words | a few thousand words | a complete chapter/section no matter how long I an outline | whatever comes
I tend to write scenes: in chronological order with no skipping I mostly in order but with some filler/skipping | whatever scene I feel like I who knows what's gonna come out
The things that come easiest to me are: dialogue I description of senses I description of action | description of characters I exposition | other
I tend to write: on a phone I on a laptop I in a notebook | on whatever paper I can find | with speech to text | in the blood of my enemies I it doesn't really matter to me I on paper first and then typed up I old school typewriter I on a computer
When I take a break from writing, it usually lasts: a few days I a few weeks I a few months I it's kind of random
My favorite thing to do when I'm on a writing break is: recharge with other creative hobbies | read/consume other media I do something physical | catch up with old friends | work on my WIP in other ways like with playlists or art | other (go to the pub and moan about having no inspiration)
In general, I think my writing habits are: pretty much what I need them to be I okay, but l'm working on making them better I non-existent I not great l i'm excited to develop them further I totally random I perfect for me
I'll tag @olivescales3, @clairelsonao3, @itusebastian and @sm-writes-chaos!
Nine Writeblrs I Want To Know Better
Cheers for the tag @sergeantnarwhalwrites! last song: Beautiful Ruin by Make Good Your Escape
favorite color: Azure blue! Second place goes to midnight purple metallic.
last movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's one of my favourite films of all time and definitely a comfort watch. I've seen it fourteen times.
currently reading: Physical-book wise, it's Atonement by Ian McEwan. I heard good things about it and picked it up for £1 in a charity shop, but I'm struggling with it at the moment. McEwan's prose is needlessly flowery and overly abstract, and it keeps yanking me out of the story.
Virtually, I'm re-reading Rush (For A Gap That Exists) by sleepstxtic on AO3. It's a crossover fanfiction between Harry Potter and Formula One, with the Harry Potter characters, houses and organisations transplanted into the world of modern Formula One racing. It's a great story even if you aren't a motorsport fan - read it here!
sweet/spicy/savory: Savoury, if I'm being honest. I do have a sweet tooth, but eating sweets too much makes me feel queasy and guilty, whereas I could never get sick of sausage rolls, steak bakes and chorizo and cheese rolls. Yum :)
relationship status: single at the moment. There are possibilities of that changing in the near future though... hmm...
current obsession: Motorsport Manager. It's a PC game where you take the reins of a fictional racing team or create your own, managing your drivers, cars, race strategy, staff and headquarters as you endeavour to win at the highest level and leave your mark on the sport. I tend to make all the people in the game into characters even though they're only randomly-generated portraits, and use the game to create storylines or scenarios. It's way too addictive. I've probably written way too many career reports and fics going into all my save files: the drama between drivers, certain dramatic races, fictional magazine articles and write-ups... at some point I'll get over the embarrassment and post a few bits here.
last thing I googled: I assume this relates to writing; otherwise it's just 'how long should you reheat cottage pie in the microwave for?' as that's what I'm having for tea tonight. The last thing I googled for writing purposes was 'France 2027 election predictions'
currently working on: A sci-fi short story regarding the first spaceflight from a 'ringworld' where a group of monks and inventors defy an oppressive, anti-technology society to launch a manned rocket into space, and are shocked by the nature of the world they inhabit. Also a dystopian science-fiction piece regarding a woman who becomes addicted to selling her memories on the black market and gradually loses her identity and sanity in the process.
I'll tag @outpost51, @acertainmoshke, @amostdelectablescribbler, @guessillcallitart, @erraticprocrastinator, @steh-lar-uh-nuhs, @sarlusmonoele, @rbbess110 and @stesierra as well as an open tag for anybody who wants to jump in! As always, no pressure: feel free to participate or not at your leisure :)
