D.D. Newcrest: I hope I am not interrupting anything, Sir. I’ve come to discuss what the Dowager Empress told me, I am sure she enlightened you as well.

Emperor Ferdinand: Of course. Come on in.

D.D. Newcrest: Your Majesty, The Dowager has made me aware of the political situation that is developing within the Diet. She also told me that you might be required to return to the capital.

Emperor Ferdinand: Yes, that is correct. However, I will only go back to the capital if I must. The Privy Council is ready to come to Gödberg if the situation worsens.

D.D. Newcrest: While I am personally prepared for any possible scenarios, I do have my concerns, Sir... What if the situation worsens? The Palace in Gödberg is not safe and the 4th Hussars, plust the palace guards, are not enough to protect us in case the situatins gets out of hand. I will make the ladies aware, but I must know Your Majesty’s plans first. Her Majesty’s safety is my primary concern.

Emperor Ferdinand: Printing money? I cannott see anything good coming from that…

Duchess Mathilde: You will have a lovely time in Gödberg, darling. When I was a child, my parents visited dear Ferdinand’s grandparents there every Spring. It is truly a magnificent place.

The First Dance

As by tradition, it is always the emperor who formally opens the ball with the first dance. This ball, however, is a very special occasion. It is not only the first dance to open the ball, it is also the very first dance of the imperial couple as a married couple.

Once Their Majesties finish, they invite their guests to join them. It is not just a polite gesture, it holds a very serious symbolic meaning. It symbolises the whole empire, it is not only the monarch, but also the nobility who keep it together.

Dowager Empress Maria: She will be your guide at court. An etiquette and protocol tutor, if you will... besides organising your events and running your household, of course.

Footman: The Dowager Empress is waiting outside, Your Majesty.

Emperor Ferdinand: Let her in. [Sips tea]

Dowager Empress Maria: Good morning, son.

Emperor Ferdinand: Good morning, Mama. I did not expect you to show up.

Dowager Empress: Where is your wife, Ferdinand?

Emperor Ferdinand: You mean, the new empress? She is getting ready with her maid, but I would not be surprised if she were still asleep. She found yesterday quite tiring.

Dowager Empress Maria: That is fair. I might just wait for her to arrive. I have to congratulate my new daughter-in-law for becoming a woman after all.

Emperor Ferdinand: How do you know? Who told you?

Dowager Empress Maria: Oh do not be silly, son. Maids talk. While I was getting ready my hairdresser told me that she overheard some girls doing the laundry talking about a blood stain on her majesty’s bed sheet. Has she decided what to do with the money yet?

Emperor Ferdinand: I have not told her about the money yet. I just thought it would ruin the evening. She is not a prostitute to throw money at. I will tell her when she comes down.

[The Empress enters the dining room]

Empress Ludovika: Good morning, Ferdinand. And Mama! I did not expect you to be here, what a lovely surprise..

Dowager Empress Maria: Good morning. I am only here to congratulate you for fulfilling your first duty as empress. I believe Ferdinand has something to say as well.

Emperor Ferdinand: Mama... could you leave us now, please?

Dowager Empress Maria: Very well, looks like I am going to break the news after all. My darling, as you consummated your marriage you are granted ten thousand simoleons by the crown. It is customary that the new empress offers a portion of her gift to the less fortunate. Further actions will be discussed with your lord steward in your presence later today. We still have to settle certain cases, such as your annual apanage.

Dowager Empress Maria: However... the country is going through a bit of a challenging financial year. But I can assure you dear, that everything will be dealt with within days. But I should go now, the Dowager of Newcrest is waiting for me in my sitting room. Have a pleasant morning you two.

Empress: No... of course not. [wipes away tears] I am just scared, Ferdinand.

Empress: It was such a busy day I did not even realise what was happening. Empress of Windenburg... sounds so wrong. This whole thing shouldn’t be happening, I’m just... The nation and you both need a strong woman and that is not me, not a child.

Emperor: You are talking nonsense, Ludovika. You are exactly what the nation and I need... You are going to be the greatest Empress this country has ever seen. I can assure you, everything will be alright. I will never let anyone hurt you.

Empress: Wha... What’s happening?

Emperor: Close your eyes, my love.
