The night before had been muggy, unpleasantly so, and Coffea’s top had stuck to his skin when they had taken their dinner outside. He’d never felt anything like it – the pressure and heaviness of the air was almost suffocating, and the heat was inescapable. He wasn’t surprised when he woke up to a thunderstorm, with flashes of lightning barely even a second before the thunder rolled in. He watched the show from his window, enjoying it the way that one could when they were safe and dry inside, and had fallen back asleep to the sound of a downpour that made him think of home in an aching way he’d not felt for weeks.

The morning was far nicer; the storm had cleared the air and the smell of the damp grass was intoxicating, especially after weeks of unrelenting sun. Coffea took advantage of the change in weather and went for a jog almost as soon as he woke, enjoying the air that was fresher than it had been in a while.

He took a cold shower when he returned and hopped out in a good mood. With Rhody’s permission he started up the laptop and waited for Viola and Cosmos to come online, like they’d organised not long ago, and smiled when their faces popped up in the video chat. Vi was beaming, cheeks flushed, and even Cos looked somewhat more awake than Coffea had expected.
