How I feel about this character;

FUCK YEAH THAT BY BOY, i love him so much and i just want him to have all of the happiness in the world like he’s been through so much shit. he has so much trauma that he’s got to deal with and i just want everyone to give him good things, why can’t he just be given good things. why do people have to keep giving him a hard time.

All the people I ship romantically with this character;

Rook and Kevin and THAT’S IT, JULIE AND KAI CAN KISS MY FUCKING ASS OKAY I HAVE SO MANY ISSUES WITH THEM BUT THAT’S A RANT FOR ANOTHER DAY --- Rook and Ben level each other out, as I’ve said in another answer. Rook is a steady support for Ben when he needs it most. As for Kevin, he’s the first person that Ben would have realized he liked more than just girls and Ben is that open hand for Kevin at any point that he needs it and Kevin is such a loyal friend when they become teens and it’s the best.

My non-romantic OTP for this character;

YELLS LOUDLY AS I SHOVE BEN AND GWEN TOGETHER LIKE THE BROTHER AND SISTER THEY ACT LIKE. they act like siblings even tho they definitely aren’t and has been shown... they could potentially not be so.. separated, but they’re not. they’re important to each other and are so protective of one another even when they don’t get along

My unpopular opinion about this character;

IF I HEAR SOMEONE SAY THAT BEN IS SELFISH ONE MORE TIME I’M GOING TO LOSE MY FUCKING MIND OMFG HE JUST WANTS SOME RECOGNITION FOR HIS EFFORTS AND HIS COCKINESS IS FUCKING EARNED AS A TEENAGER JFC LET THE BOY LIVE

Hi, can we get someone actually acknowledging Ben’s trauma and hardship so he can start healing like ???

How I feel about this character;

Uuuuum like he’s a fucking cinnamon roll?? I love him so much, he’s such a good and interesting character as well as a calming one. He lives on earth in this culture that’s very different from his own and yet he shows a like for it, an appreciation for all kinds of different cultures. It was Rook’s dream to be a plumber and now he is! And that makes it even better.

All the people I ship romantically with this character;

Just Ben. I know he supposedly has a ‘girlfriend’ in canon but you see… They don’t click. He bends to her will too much and she needs someone who can meet her with the same kind of fire. Ben and Rook work really well together. Rook needs a force that will push him to take risks, but does listen to him, hears him, and takes him along for the rides that they both can rely on each other through. Ben needs someone to help keep him steady, otherwise he’s likely to burn out. They just FIT.

My non-romantic OTP for this character;

Throws him and Shar together and shouts about sibling repationships. They’re so AWESOME TOGETHER WHY IS THERE NOT MORE OF THEM. Shar is able to follow her dream because Rook breaks down a wall and she is MORE than ready to break down walls of her own. Rook is more than proud of her too and I yell

My unpopular opinion about this character;

He’s not ignorant to the ways of Earth as much as people think!!! He’s been a plumber for a WHILE and he is by no means an expert but he’s not STUPID, he just simply doesn’t know plenty of social things cause that takes a hell of a lot of practice

How I feel about this character;

The Good Son. He’s made mistakes, he’s done things wrong in his life — but he’s done some changes to make himself a better person. He turns his life around despite the odds that were against him and there’s obviously a lot of guilt he still holds for what he’s done… and yet, he’s met with the acceptance that he needs. He wanted it to be better so he made sure to do that, sure, he’s still got things haunting him and has some tricks and ticks that aren’t perfect. That’s okay, nobody is really perfect and it’s makes Kevin… Kevin. I mean, he made friends with Ben and Gwen the moment he had the chance at something brighter, something better. It was what he needed, even after having the chance as a kid and turning it down as a kid – he became older and wiser and made the best decision for himself that he could.

All the people I ship romantically with this character;

Ben and Gwen and that’s it! Gwen and Kevin make a good combination in how they both compliment and contrast each other. They work well together and give one another the means to do better. I will admit, the way they push the to together in canon needs to be hit in the face because they would have gotten together slowly — I do agree with them being together!

As for Ben, I think that’s obvious. Kevin was certainly the first boy Ben crushed on and Ben was definitely the first once that gave the other an open invitation into happiness. Kevin is also pretty obviously protective of Ben once they’re on the same side, Ben having forgave Kevin for so much shit there’s no way I could list it all.

My non-romantic OTP for this character;

Ben! As I stated before, they have a history and a connection. They can relate on a level that not everybody understands, they’ve been through so much that it’s hard to find someone who could relate to one another. It’s a bond in trauma and the fact that despite what has happened, they’ve used it as reason to fight harder together rather than against each other. Ben has given Kevin a chance at a good life and Kevin has given Ben one friendship he has never had before.

My unpopular opinion about this character;

HE DID TRY TO KILL BEN AND PEOPLE NEED TO STOP DOWN-PLAYING THAT BECAUSE IT IS NOT A SMALL THING. HOWEVER, HIS JUDGEMENT WAS IMPAIRED BY HIS MUTATION AND THEREFORE HE SHOULDN’T BE TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL GIVEN ALL HE’S DONE SINCE.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon;

I wish we got more of a showing into his adjustment of feeling more like part of a group with Gwen and Ben rather than an outsider. The series kind of just threw him in and didn’t give a lot of build-up to the dynamic as it should have been there.

How I feel about this character;

SUNSHINE INCARNATE but also full of pain nobody really sees and so much deep emotion that it’s painful to think about. He is the most selfless and idealistic person I have ever seen in a manga, he just wants peace and for nobody to die. Although it’s still funny to me that there are people who think he’s not dangerous just because he won’t kill like. Vash will still shoot you if need be, it just won’t be in a spot where it could cause death. There’s also the fact that he obviously tries super hard not to be a burden for other people and his depression is. Painfully obvious

All the people I ship romantically with this character;

I only ship him with Nick, honestly. They fit together too well for me not to. Nick is someone that Vash can always count on, even if their ideals don’t line up perfectly. They’re important to each other and have a bond that runs too deep to ignore. It’s the kind that they could be in a fight and Vash could tell Nick to go, to save these people and Vash will be fine — and Nick will trust him on that, and if not. He knows it’s useless to argue on this and will only waste more time. They need each other, too. Vash needs someone to ground him and Nick needs some sunshine in his life.

My non-romantic OTP for this character;

still Nick and Vash tbh cause I can’t not because of the reasons already listed. They just fit together like puzzle pieces okay like kill me

My unpopular opinion about this character;

HE ISN’T JUST A FLIRT OR A WOMANIZER AND I WILL FUCKING DESTROY THE ANIME FOR SUGGESTING THAT HE IS I SWEAR

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon;

It’s honestly purposeful that Vash never really gets a… resolution in the end of the manga and as painful as it is, I can’t disagree with it, but in my heart Vash and Nick got to go to earth and get married in a field of red flowers cause I wish they could have gotten their happy ending

May you please do a character analysis on Rook?

cracks my knuckles loudly after ages and after midnight

this took me forever to get to and i apologize for that, life got in the way is the best explanation that i can really give honestly, but i’m ready to go with this.

let me start off by staying that rook’s people in general are very obviously the kind that are thoroughly steeped in tradition. the kind of tradition that it’s pretty clear that your family has a plan for you from before you’re really even up and walking around. although, i guess that’s not a whole lot considering everyone is expected to stay and become farmers and continue on like that until they get married and have kids. their life is simple and it’s got a plan.

rook very obviously didn’t want to stick to that plan, he wanted something different and it’s hinted a lot that he probably had a lot of things that he kept to tinker with in his room. ( frankly, it seems highly likely that much of the protool he has could have been designed by him ) his father obviously didn’t give him a lot of support in this. he doesn’t seem to have gotten a lot of support in general straying so far from the path in the beginning, so he was going on his own and doing what he wanted with a hell of a lot of determination.

then he succeeds. and i don’t think the series gives this enough credit because from what i can tell? rook is the FIRST revonnahgander to become a plumber. the very first, soon followed along by his sister, but he is the first and there’s a lot of challenge to be had in that. something rook obviously never backs down from, even in all the strange things that he encounters…. which brings me to when he meets ben.

now i’ve seen a lot of people talk about rook looking up to ben and then being disappointed upon meeting him and… you know, i do agree that rook looked up to ben, but i don’t think disappointed is a good word, really. i think rook is surprised because he meets this larger-than-life legend that’s protected the galaxy and finds him to be very… human. or better said in this, he finds ben to be flawed, to find that he’s not this perfect poster boy hero and learns who ben actually is as a person. which does take time, but they become this amazing team and i think that’s actually really good for ben because from all that rook has done, it does seem like he broke the mold so far that he might have wondered if it was the right choice at points.

then he meets this human boy filled with life and determination and, yes, FLAWS. someone who takes those flaws and runs with them in strides, even if he might not like them, ( which i’ll get to in my giant ass analysis of ben himself another night ) and i think it helps rook to realize that it’s okay to be different. something he already knew, but i think it gives him more… ground to stand on. if that makes sense.

my point is, rook is the first to brake out of this tradition that he later does help to save because he still cares about where he comes from. he’s just embraced something different than what was expected and even if his dad obviously is hesitant to give his approval to it —- rook grows more into his own person, the person he set out to be when he first left to be plumber.

it’s past midnight so i’m so sorry if this all doesn’t make sense, but i love rook and i hope that i gave you something good from this.

Benrook for the pairing challenge

“You’re the only one I trust to do this.”

The words carry a heavy weight with them from across the space of Rook’s room. Ben is only a few feet away, eyes steady and as determined at the Revonnahgander has ever seen them. He thinks that no one would be able to look to those eyes and recognize the look for what it is. Most people only see the joking side of the hero, only see him putting a front of cocky smiles and over-confidence, but this --- this is the side of him that only so many get to see. It makes his breath catch in his throat, not wanting to look down to what Ben holds in his hand because of what it would mean.

It’s the reconstruction of the same remote that he had gotten a hold of while Ben was under the influence of Nyancy. He remembers clearly the dulled out pain in his partner’s gaze as he had been switched unwillingly from form to form. A weight settles deep within his chest at the memory, making it hard to breath with how heavy it is as though it takes up too much space for any air to be allowed into his lungs.

He doesn’t like that the plumbers made another as thought Ben is someone who might one day go out of control and they need some sort of insurance.

“Ben, I do not ---”

“Rook, you’re the only one. I don’t trust anyone else to hold onto this and maybe... it’ll come in handy.”

There’s no trace of shaking fear in his voice, but Rook can hear the tension just underneath and the meaning behind it. If something goes wrong, the last thing Ben wants to be is a threat to everyone around him. He’s already gone through that once recently, making no mention of time he was hypnotized as a kid or the alternate versions of him that Rook has been made aware of. The very ones that prove what kind of damage Ben is capable of if his life had gone differently.

Rook has no right to deny him this security and he can’t stomach the thought of a faceless plumber holding the remote in his hands.

“Alright, but I do not think that I will have need of it.”

His hand is just steady enough to take the remote from Ben’s slack grip, it feels like it should be heavier than it is with everything that it resembles. The sudden and complete desire to destroy it surges through him to tighten his grip. Fingers twitching around a control to the omnitrix, barely restraining himself from crushing it in his palm. They would just make another. At least like this, Rook can keep anyone from using against the human he has come to love.

When Ben smiles, it makes his chest ache from the bittersweet twist he can see across the edges and how it falls just short of his eyes.

“Probably not.”

Neither of them say a word about it again, but Rook feels the weight of it keenly even after he’s locked it away tight. If it makes him hold Ben just a little bit tighter that night, the brunet doesn’t complain.

There’s a chill to the air where Nick can see his breath with every exhale without the need for a cigarette. Beside him, he hears every crunch of Vash’s boots through the lingering snow on the sidewalk on their way home from their date with warmth being sapped from exposed skin and making the blond’s nose and cheeks tint to a pinkish color.

The glow catches his eyes, draws his attention away for a moment and pulls him into his own thoughts before he can really think about it. Only when Vash smiles at him, sunshine bright in how it spreads over his features does he turn away under the guise of grabbing a cigarette from his jacket pocket. His actions are automatic as his eyes drift away from the other and he doesn’t hear him duck down to grab at the snow all around them.

It bites into Vash’s exposed fingers, chill traveling up his arm and clinging beneath his skin as he compacts it tight together. The resulting snowball settles easily into his palm as he stops walking to get his companions attention with fingers curling into the snow to match the curl of his lips into a smile.

“Those things will kill you, you know.”

He can practically see the comeback forming on Nick’s tongue as he swings his head to regard the blond before it’s falling away. It only takes a second for him to take in that Vash has stopped walking and to follow suit before he’s taking in the snowball in his hand. The scowl on his face is immediate to act as a counterpoint to Vash’s own brightening grin.

“Don’t you dare throw that snowba--”

Too late, it’s already leaving Vash’s hand to slam with perfect accuracy into Nick’s face and effectively knock the cigarette from his mouth.

“Goddammit!”

Laughter bursts through the winter air from Vash’s lips as he wraps an arm around his own middle for support, he’s not even paying as much attention to grumbling man as he probably should be because he’s not expecting the cold that hits him on the back of his neck. It jolts down his spine with a shout from in between his laughter that he just can’t calm down. Instead, he’s running after Nick with another snowball and dodging the next one thrown his way.

They’re in the middle of public, they’re probably getting strange looks, but neither of them seem to really care because Vash’s laughter is proving contagious and Nick’s smile is warming the cold that’s starting to creep in. Then, of course, one of them -- impossible to tell who -- slips on ice and they go tumbling into the bank of snow, stopping the laughter for a heartbeat before the chuckles continue.

Nick shoves snow into the blond face in revenge, watching as Vash just laughs in response and he can see color rising to his cheeks ---- then he’s catching the laughter against his own smiling lips to chase away the winter cold clinging to his own flushed cheeks.

I just want to let you know that this got me laughing a little bit because this reminds me of that quote from parks and rec like ‘hey, honey, how did you sleep? i adopted 32 cats and dogs. do you want pancakes?’ only it’s ‘hey, honey, i just adopted this kid so we’re parents now, do you want pancakes?’ and i’m laughing because that’s actually something i talked to my friend about because that vash would do to wolfwood.
