why wd {free will} be "no issue"? long as ~megalomaniacs keep trying to take over the world, freedom is *always* at risk.. in this season, Jack's especially, since dark forces are seeking to control & manipulate him for power, etc.. logically, every story in all media where a group of heroes stop power-mad villains & such, qualifies as teams fighting for free will.. xD
If free will is always the issue then there would be no point in specifically pointing it out by naming your team after that issue, right? At least that would be my take on it.
If free will is always something worth fighting for, just as the humans need air to breathe, why would you explicitly name it unless it’s addressed? People usually don’t talk a lot about breathing unless they’ve got a problem with it.
In that scene they were talking about grave robbery just a minute ago, so there is no real case of free will being threatened by a megalomaniac here. Compare that to the time when Dean first named them “Team Free Will”: they just came back from Michael telling them that free will is an illusion and in the end everybody’s fate was decided a long time ago. Back then that name meant something because it was the complete opposite philosophy of life that the angels had and that they tried to force on the Winchesters.
In context of the grave robbery case it has no relevance because grave robbery isn’t really a free-will-or-not issue. And even in the context of Jack’s powers it doesn’t make a lot of sense coming from Dean because Dean is the last one in the room who believes Jack can control his own fate.
I admit that in a way it’s a philosophical question and my view of that matter certainly isn’t the only one or the only correct one. But for the reasons explained in the review and above I don’t see any value for this term within the context of this episode. As a result, it looks to me like the writer put that line in there just because the term is really well liked by many fans up until today.
