To tell you the truth, this next one is a bittersweet one. On the one hand, it’s a mighty fine new song from French group Her, on the other hand, it’s a heartwrenching affair. As a long time fan of the band, I share the song with a big sigh. It was really tough to learn of the loss of co-founder Simon Carpenter to cancer. We Choose is the group’s first release since his tragic passing. It’s a torch in memory of Simon, on which frontman Victor Solf carries haunting verses into a hypnotic refrain with an airy sonic palette and classic soul style punctuated by Simon’s final vocal performance. It’s as moving a song as we’ve ever heard from Her, a more stark yet still sophisticated and brassy offering that cuts to the core. We Choose is a somber yet triumphant hymnal and a striking departure from the rambunctious groove and fiery embers of Five Minutes and some of their other songs. Her has a long road of success ahead, but I don’t think any fan will forget Simon Carpenter’s crucial role in the band. I know I won’t. I look forward to their highly anticipated self-titled full length album, out March 30th on Republic Records.
