simon’s destiny confirmed for extremely good
And tough, too. Even on the easiest difficulty, I was getting roughed up a lot; it’s clearly based on the original game, but manages to Doom-ify (so to speak) the situations in ways that feel really interesting and twitchy, and the way the classic Doom key system forces you into forks in the road and then backtracking somewhat feels a touch modernVania-ish, which I appreciate. I also ended up switching up my subweapons a lot, the knife’s really good for proper ranged attacks since it just flies til it hits something and it has a three-spread instead of just one, the axe is decently strong and the holy water was extremely useful against The Creature. Even the platforming felt pretty natural, it’s good stuff.
I can’t even really nitpick anything about it aside from how awkward aiming feels without the crosshair (hence the tiny dot you can see in a couple screenshots). Other than that, I just kind of wish there was more, even though it’s already an extremely solid set of six levels. I mean, easy took me a couple hours to beat and I’m not exactly that great at these sorts of games. I wouldn’t mind seeing some extra characters or something along those lines, like an Alucard mode or Sypha mode and so on.
(That said, the Launch Trailer shows multiple enemies I never ran into on easy mode, so it may well be that the harder difficulties have their own enemies and everything, which is extremely good)
Still, really good. Definitely download it if you’re interested.
And a friend of mine(@livingcorpse77) decided to LP a DooM mod that’s stylized in the sense of being Castlevania-themed, and I got a shout out here partway through.
