Simon’s Rock: if you do not have a suitable parent or guardian, one will be appointed to you.
My advisor is one of the best people I know but I spend so much time being confused by his actions… mostly because I still have no idea what to do with adults that like. actually care about me. I just got this string of messages through the unsanctioned compsci department IM service, essentially telling me to uh. not push myself.
some iconic moments from reunion so far
- a really drunk lady answering “JIM MONSONIS!” for every single answer at SR jeopardy - “I was the BDOC…… big d*ke on campus” - “I dabbled, you know. on both sides of the fence.” - “I love talking to alums about gay stuff because they’re all, like, haha same.” - “AND YOU WOULD KNOW THIS IF YOU CAME TO MY EXHIBIT.” - our socially awkward provost yelling “NO!” and running away when I asked him to compete in jeopardy - “six dollars……… and 25 cents!” - “early college, but later than you think” - seeing one of the alums at the 24/7 gas station @toosmallortootall and I went to after we got off work at midnight
anyone going to simon’s rock young writers workshop this summer? message me if you are!
SRC Freshman!
Back when I was first accepted into Simon’s Rock, I turned to tumblr and was astonished by the lack of student support. So if you are planning on attending Bard College at Simon’s Rock for the Fall 2017 semester, feel free to come talk to me! I’m just now completing my own freshman year and I would be very happy to answer questions about academics, social life, or anything related to the SRC experience. Don’t be shy :)
In Poe class like
Other students: Poe doesn't believe women are people and believes in art for the sake of art like some kind of gross frat boy who writes bad poetry.
Me: Nono listen Poe was a salty bastard and he doesn't take any of his narrators seriously, especially the ones where he is supposed to be narrating. If he went to this school rn we would be besties, all his friends were women, "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a huge elaborate metaphor for gay sex...

Hi, I'm considering applying to Simon's Rock Young Writers Workshop this summer. I couldn't really find any reviews on the program other than on teenink, and I was wondering if I could get your input? (I found a post of yours on the tag for the camp.) What were classes like, how was the food, are the dorms nice, advice on the application, how does it compare to creative writing summer programs, etc. Thank you so much!! It means a lot to me.
I’ve attended two creative writing summer workshops, the Simon’s Rock YWW a couple years ago and then CSSSA in 2015. Your mileage may vary, but honestly I didn’t get a lot out of YWW.
I live in California and almost everyone there was from NYC and I literally didn’t develop meaningful friendships with anyone there (the opposite of my experience at CSSSA). Participants ranged from teenagers who were really serious about creative writing to kids who didn’t even enjoy it but whose parents wanted to get them out of the house, though the guy I know who was in that boat did say he liked writing by the end, so maybe I just wasn’t the target audience. Also there were like 8 other guys and like 50 girls.
Academically, it was a mixed bag. We were randomly divided into equal-sized groups that spent the entire time with the same teacher, and the things teachers did differed a lot. Also when we got there they said it was a writing class but not a creative writing class, which was weird. The class did not significantly improve my writing or my outlook on my creative work (unlike CSSSA), though it did help me generate some new pieces and it did help some people become comfortable with reading their work aloud, and my teacher was very cool. (She was a playwright from Ireland who had a lot to say about the nuances of culture.)
But I do remember really enjoying the experience of being on a college campus and being away from my family and being around people who actually cared about things, unlike most of my classmates at high school. The campus and food were really nice, and we spent a lot of quality bonding time doing our homework in the lounge and watching Frozen in the other lounge. I was so entranced with this routine away from my ordinary life that I almost applied to Simon’s Rock. There are definitely some memories I’ll keep, but overall I didn’t get much out of it.
i never thought i would say this but thank the gods and goddesses and baby jesus for reddit
/r/explainlikeimfive is singlehandedly (as it were) getting me through the reading for my 300 level philosophy and literary theory classes
