This definitely turned out to be one of the best animes I've seen in a while. Yet the last episode (actually, the whole second half of the series) broke my heart into so many little pieces. Out of the +10 characters, about four of them got a 'happy' ending - none of which were the main characters. The top four characters: Kamina, Simon, Yoko, and Nia had no happy ending... two of them had a bitter - sweet one. Kamina died. His name is countless repeated throughout the show, and every time I heard it all I could do was cringe. Simon lost Kamina, and later lost his literally one-minute wife, Nia. He left all his friends, never remarried, and spent his days walking endlessly with Boota. Yoko showed her feelings towards Kamina and lost him, then had Kittan profess his love for her and then he died. She spent the rest of her life back in the island where she resides as 'Ms. Yomoko'. Nia lost her father twice: once when he abandoned her and then was killed, and then when he came back for just a few minutes to die once more for the sake of Team Gurren. She is then 'awakened' as a messenger of the anti-spiral, and her life is cut in half even after Simon saves her. These four characters all went through such hardships... and although Simon and Yoko are seen smiling at the end, you can just feel the sadness their hearts hold. But that's where this anime makes it to the top of my list; in real life, happy endings don't always exist... they are a small miracle that only some people may attain. And even then, happy endings don't last forever... they end, just like life does. Everyone dies and sadness is an emotion that humans know better than anything else. But having the power to smile after losing that happiness... that's real strength.
