5 Tips to Maximize Your Pokémon Hunting in Let's Go!: Eevee & Pikachu
Most of us are familiar with the mechanics of Pokémon GO! that have replaced standard wild Pokémon encounters, but you may not have noticed that they kept a few tricks in the UI that can earn you extra XP while catching, or increase your rate of finding rare Pokémon. Some, the game tells you about, like berries and Pokéball types, but here, I've pulled together a list of a few that the game doesn't teach you, or only mentions briefly. Ready? Let's go!
Curve Balls. Ah, the ol' flick of the wrist. In Pokémon GO! , trainers could swirl and swing their Pokéballs just slightly off screen, curving around to hit the target for a critical catch. If you are using the Pokéball Plus controller or joycons that have been disconnected from the body of your Switch, you can obtain the same effect by swinging slightly out on your controller motion, or by flicking a backhand ball at your target. It won't auto catch the Pokémon, but you'll get a Technique Bonus on your XP if successful. Combo that with a First Toss, New Pokémon, or Target Type (Great, Excellsnt, etc.) Bonus and you'll rack up the XP in no time. (We haven't figured out a way to do this on the full Switch console with connected joycons, but stay tuned.)
Catch Streak. Remember chaining Pokémon encounters to hunt shinies in the original gens? Catch streaks are fairly similar. The more Pokémon of the same species you catch in a row, the higher your catch streak goes. In GO! it netted you an XP bonus, and it still does, but more importantly, the higher your catch streak, the better your chance of rare Pokémon native to the area spawning. (A few I've found so far: Bulbasaur in Veridian, Charmander outside Mt. Moon, Chansey in Mt. Moon, and Squirtle on Routes 24&25 above Cerulean). Looks like those Zubat are good for something at last!
Lures. Okay, okay, so they tell you about these in game. But, by the time you get one, the only guy who talks about it is a sad little NPC whose efforts to draw in Pokemon are being thwarted by the lady behind him spraying repel. Rude.
Pokemon Abilities, Moves, & Held Items. Now, this one I haven't tested yet, so take it with a grain of salt. Some Pokemon have abilities that keep wild Pokémon away (Wobuffet in Gen 2 with Ghost Tag), and certain held items can do the same. Moves like Sweet Scent will also draw Pokémon in like Lures. Presumably, having a Pokémon with one of these abilities or items out of its Pokéball and following you around should do the trick!
Running Away. Okay Fael, you're fucking with us, right? Nope. If you get into an encounter and run, the Pokémon despawns. Each grass patch can only hold so many Pokémon, and in order for more to spawn, some have to despawn. If you just can't seem to get the one you want to show up, try scaring a few others off like this.

Welcome to the D2v3 Gaming System Version 3, a tabletop gaming system designed for quick role playing games when you don’t have the time (or the will) for more complicated RPG systems, but you still want to do a little role playing.
The focus behind the simple mechanics of the D2v3 system is to encourage more roleplay (actual character and story-based gaming) and less roll play (throwing dice and big numbers around). Banking on vagaries of obscure rules should not figure into a good, solid, fun game.
All you really need to play a game with the D2v3 system is this document, a few pencils, some paper, a coin or die per player, and someone willing to be the game master. Once you have these, you’ll be ready to start roleplaying!
The acquisition of items and gold is of little importance in the mechanics of the D2v3 system. It is assumed that the heroes will acquire better armor, newer weapons, and so on as the game plays out over time. The details of all of these are left up to the game master and the player’s imaginations.
When your character goes up a level, your character will automatically have skill points to spend on various things, including a better armor class and better damage potential. Players are encouraged to give stories and reasons as to why their characters’ stats have improved. Perhaps your character now has a longsword instead of a short sword, has a new shield, or has learned the subtle art of getting out of the way. Feel free to be creative.
