Simple Scones
Ingredients:
2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter
1/2 cup heavy cream (or half and half)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Preheat oven too 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to cut it into the dry ingredients until you have a crumbly dough.
In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the cream, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
Optional: This is when you add mix in’s... see final notes for my favorite mix in’s
Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and work it together into a ball, then flatten into a circle. Cut the dough into 8 equal-sized pieces and place them on the prepared baking sheet, making sure to leave a little room between each one.
Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 5-10 minutes or until the scones are chilled. (You want the butter in the dough to be as cold as possible when it goes into the oven)
Brush the tops of each scone with a extra heavy cream. (For unglazed sweet scones, sprinkle coarse sugar on top)
Bake at 400°F for 18-22 minutes or until the tops of the scones are lightly browned.
Allow scones to cool completely before adding any kind of glaze.
Final Notes:
My favorite mix in’s for scones are chocolate mini chocolate chips, orange zest (with an orange glaze), cinnamon sugar, and beef jerky minced finely with Parmesan cheese.
I used to add recipes to all of my fan fiction that included food when I was younger, and I really enjoyed doing that. So there may be more recipes linked in future chapters.
This one is not my families recipe, but it is pretty much the same!
