drabble prompt: gay jester falls in love with the king and their secret love goes on for years UNTIL SOMETHING TRAGIC HAPPENS. . . you fill in the rest

WELLL IT’S LAME AND SMALL BUT I HOPE IT’S OK AH <3 

All because the chambermaid couldn’t keep her mouth shut. She’d walked in at the worst time- just as the king was buttoning up his shirt, the still-naked jester lying by his side.

Although she swore to silence, everyone knew by the next evening. The king’s advisor suggested a beheading, but he was not one for violence. Besides, killing her now would do nothing. The nature of their relationship had already been revealed. 

The queen, betrayed and humiliated, locked herself in the highest tower of the castle and refused to come out for as long as she lived. The people adored the queen, and so the king was once again at an odds with his people. They were telling him to abdicate.

The jester was beyond apologetic, and on more than one occasion he tried to flee, to walk away from his love forever due to what he’d caused. But the king begged him to stay, pleaded with him not to abandon him too. He couldn’t handle losing him, but he could handle losing his kingdom. 

It was without a second thought that the king put down his crown, took the jester’s hand in his own, and announced the end of his reign. The kingdom was in shock- to abandon a life of power and luxury for a mere entertainer!But his mind was set. It was with a wide smile that he rode off into distant lands with his beloved, where he’d never be bothered or shunned for the life he left behind. The jester, tired of acting like a fool day in, day out, decided to become a bard instead, and composed the most beautiful love songs for years to come.

It took the queen a long time to leave her tower, but she managed in the end. The chambermaid suffered no real consequence, but felt awful about it for the rest of her life. She’d really liked the king.
