Best. Marathon. Ever.
By Mason Maguire
By the time this posts, FXX Network’s “Every. Simpsons. Ever.” marathon will be dwindling down. Spanning an unprecedented 12 days and containing every episode (and one movie) in The Simpsons’s 25 year long run, this block of programming is the longest and most ambitious of its kind in the history of television.
While marathons are nothing new to programming, what set this particular one apart from, say, a Twilight Zone marathon on New Years was how much this felt like a celebration of the show itself. Tongue-in-cheek ads paired the decline of civilization with classic episode clips. On social media, showrunners and writers from the past and present shared their memories of making each episode as the episode was re-aired. Pop culture sites such as HitFix kept readers up to date with what episodes airing that day, advising them which to watch and which to skip. On top of that, the marathon served as a lead-in to the launch of the Simpsons World app, which will have every episode available to mobile users. The app launches in October, and will allow users to share episodes and clips with their friends on Facebook and Twitter. This experience won’t be available to everyone. However, you’ll need a cable subscription authentication to access full episodes. Clips will still be available for users (like me) without a cable subscription.
It’s hard to think of another show more deserving of this treatment, regardless of your opinion on the quality of The Simpsons. The show has been a part of the cultural tapestry since its premiered on Christmas 25 years ago. It allowed animation to be viewed as a serious medium that could hold its own against other sitcom giants. But beyond that, the show still manages to hold up. It’s funny, touching, and endlessly sharable.
