Since David was out with “Saroo” and their parents both had errands to run last minute, Anthony’s parents weren’t able to take off work in time... But thankfully, Clementine was free to help babysit!
When she got there, the household seemed unusually dreary... Especially the girls. Normally, they were always excited to see her, but this time they didn’t even greet her at the door... Only the parents did before they had to go.
After putting the boys down to nap, she went to check on the girls... However, when she tried signing and talking with them, they refused... So instead, she just sat with them in silence until Sydney finally jumped up with tears in her eyes.
Sydney: I wish David would break up with Lara and marry you!
What a statement! Clementine was so shocked, it took her a moment to process what was said.
Clementine: Marry me? But why?
Sydney: Cuz then we could be sisters...
Clementine’s eyes softened as she got off the bed to hug her and wipe away the tears that now began to spill.
Clementine: You’re silly... We can still be sisters even if David and I aren’t married.
Indiana, a quiet observer of their signs, now jumped in to interject.
Indiana: But if you got married, we could be REAL sisters!
Clementine: Wha- What is going on with you two? Why would I want to marry stinky David anyway?
Sydney raised a brow at Clementine’s somewhat teasing remark.
Sydney: Isn’t he the reason you wanted to learn sign language?
Clementine was taken aback by Sydney’s comment... To be real, the whole conversation threw her off! That wasn’t why... Was it? It was what got her interested in learning, but... What was the point of her learning sign language now?
She paused in deep thought, studying the faces of her two sisters in spirit before she came to a new conclusion... It was so much more than that.
Clementine: Well... Maybe at first... But then, I got to meet you all. Growing up with your family has taught me so much... You and your family are the reason I want to be an interpreter one day... I can’t imagine doing anything else.
The girls were quiet for a few moments before Sydney began to sign—
Sydney: I know David is stinky... But are you sure you can’t marry him?
Clementine chuckled slightly, shaking her head.
Clementine: I’m sure...
Indiana: But we can still be sisters?
They immediately hugged her.
Clementine: Do you feel a little better now?
They both nodded, new smiles brightening their countenance as if a burden was lifted.
Clementine: Good... Now who wants snacks?
After an enthusiastic yes, Clementine was able to escape the room before her own tears did. While the conversation comforted her broken heart, it was still very broken... But with a renewed sense of purpose.
She was able to find her why.
