Episode 65

BAILEY: How’s my little widdle pumpkin?

AUDREY: Bailey, I think I had a contraction just now.

BAILEY: Um, okay. I think this party is wrapping up soon, so just hang on. Here, let me rub your back.

BAILEY: Feel better?

AUDREY: For the time being, yeah.

AUDREY: Uh oh.

BAILEY: What’s wrong?

AUDREY: I need to go to the restroom. Can you come with me? Please?

AUDREY: (thinking) Shit, my pants are soaked! Good thing I chose the stall with plenty of toilet paper.

BAILEY: Audrey, are you all right in there?

AUDREY: I think so. I’m coming out soon, save me a seat nearby.

She dabbed her underpants dry with toilet paper, got out of the restroom and sat gingerly on a nearby loveseat with Bailey’s help.

AUDREY: Bailey, keep it down but... I think my water just broke.

BAILEY: WHAT?!

AUDREY: I think the baby’s coming, Bailey!

Afternoon

Trying to stretch the uncomfortable moodlets away. "Ughhhhhh!" Her body was absolutely revolting against her.

Withdrawal symptoms didn't care you were on a peaceful farm trying to recover and heal. Where was the coke??? The Mimosa???? The parties???!!!

Ruth came over to check on her. She came over with a sweet smile and eyes that said, she knew..

"You're doing good sweetie, better than you think."

"Miss Ruth the struggle is so real right now," her lips poked out.

"And it will get better. Remember one thing at a time. Let's have lunch out here on the patio. I'll warm up my Gumbo that I'm sure your stomach will appreciate."

And Ruth was right, that gumbo tasted like she put her whole soul into it.

But she wished, then even prayed that the ice tea she was drinking with it turned into a mimosa. Didn't Jesus turn water into wine...or however it went???

Early Thursday morning she was walking out the door with her suitcase and a decision she refused to talk herself out of. 🌿 No second guessing. No standing in the mirror. No one last drink to take the edge off.

She didn't know a place could feel this different. 😌

Arriving at Ruth's Home

She could hear the animals before she could even see the house properly. 👀

Something bleating. Something mooing. The distinct sound of a rooster. 🐓

Naomi slowed her steps just slightly.

...was that a goat? 🐐🖤

🧳Nobody told her it was going to be a FARM.

Cassidy stepped inside first and went straight to Ruth. 💜

By the time Marlowe and Naomi made it through the door. The goats and sheep followed.🐐🐑 Uninvited. Unbothered. Fully committed to being part of whatever this was.

Ruth didn't even look bothered. 😌

Naomi stood in the doorway of a farmhouse in Henford-on-Bagley with sheep at her feet and realized this was going to be a very different kind of recovery. 🖤

Naomi called up her boyfriend to meet at the spa. They seriously needed to talk.

The scandal got there before they did. People outside were already waving them off before she even reached the door. Her and Onacona both. She kept walking. Head down. What else was there to do. 😶

She tried to explain it. Both hands out. What happened, how it happened, how Sean got involved. Onacona listened. Then he talked. He was her boyfriend. He was also her supplier. The last thing he needed was a public scandal with his name attached to it. Too much attention. Too much risk. Too messy. She couldn't even argue with that. 😔

He wasn't angry exactly. Just done. He broke up with her outside a spa on a Tuesday morning while strangers booed from the street. 💀

After they left she put the coke on the counter and screamed into an empty house. Not words. Just sound. Then words. Bad ones. Directed at someone specific. She told God exactly what she thought about His plan. She told Him what she thought about taking Joaquin. About taking Jamila after she finally went back. About the lightning that didn't mean anything. About all of it. No answer came.

The rage burned itself out somewhere around 3AM and left nothing behind. She stood there in the kitchen until her legs didn't want to hold her anymore. 💔

Days later..

Jamila thought she was getting better. That's what she had told herself all week. Rest. Clean habits. No more coke. The fever would break. Her body just needed time. Monday morning at 2am it was worse than it had ever been. She was burning from the inside and she didn't have enough left in her to do anything about it.

Naomi pushed through the front door at 2am running on nothing. Long shift. New work rival standing deliberately between her and her next promotion. The kind of night that makes you want to pour something strong and not think about any of it until morning. She was just going to bed. That was all she wanted. Just bed.

She heard it on the way up the stairs. A thump. Loud. Wrong. Coming from the room right next to hers. Her hand was on the door before she finished the thought. Jamila was on the floor. Still. Bonnet still on. Body layered in sweat like she had been burning up for hours. She wasn't moving. Naomi stood in the doorway and her brain did that thing brains do when they don't want to understand something. It took a second. It took a second too long. Then it hit her. She walked in. She stood over her and she just stood there. She kept waiting for Jamila to move.

He didn't even hesitate. One text and he was on the dock. She appreciated that about him. No games. No making her wait to prove a point. The Fearful Solitude moodlet didn't stand a chance. 💋🌺

She also didn't know the boat had a hot tub. She was learning a lot about this rental.

Sebastian was sweet in a way she wasn't used to from a man she'd known for less than 48 hours. Unhurried. Actually looking at her. The tense feeling from this morning was somewhere at the bottom of the Sulani water now. She had one day left and she was going to use every hour of it.
