RACE 07 (2007)

"You've got a suspension problem" warns the guy on my radio immediately after I careen my touring BMW into a wall at well over 130 kilometers per hour. Whilst the undercarriage of my vehicle may not have fared so well in the crash (a collision that by every rights should have resulted in my immediate death, or at least my immediate retirement from the race), my car seems fine to simply reverse back onto the track in the way of oncoming traffic and to rejoin the race. As ever, Simulation Racing games manage to emulate absolutely everything about motorsports except for the ability to be really, really bad at them, which is a shame, as it would make the large learning curve at the beginning all that more eventful.

Still, it's not like RACE 07 isn't already an abundance of riches. As well as simulating the entire '07 season of the FIA WTCC (no idea about the first acronym, second is probably World Touring Car Championship) down to the precise vehicles, drivers and competition rules (this is a game where you can spend longer qualifying for a race than actually racing it), the game also has all the tracks and drivers from the '06 season alongside Formula 3000, Formula BMW and both SR2 and SR3 sports car class vehicles, all of which are individually tunable and have their own specific rules, handling and damage mapping. So presumably if you are a really big fan of mid-tier motorsports from nearly a decade ago, then this is probably a massive, massive title for you.

Still, mustn't grumble. Despite my complete inability to know the difference between a BMW touring car and a Formula BMW car I can still see that RACE 07 is a pretty extensive and solid racing simulation, and whilst it shows its age, its actually still a pretty solid game if you like detailed, realistic racers. Indeed, I handed the controls over to a friend of mine who knows what a 'Brands Hatch' is, and he seemed mightily chuffed with it, saying that it was just like the actual track. Whilst it's doubtlessly no Gran Turismo, it's also a mere £2.49, will run on pretty much anything, and has an active online multiplayer mode (although I'm told you need to join moderated communities should you wish to avoid rammers and cheats, so make of that what you will). I believe it also comes with a free version of itself that adds onto Simbin's free-to-play successor 'Formula Raceroom', but don't quote me on that one as I got it in a bundle. Still, cheap, cheerful, and with a suprising amount of content, RACE 07 is far more enjoyable than it's increasingly dated timestamp would suggest.

How long did I play? - 1.8 hours Did I finish it? - N/A Would I play it again? - Possibly, but I have other Sim Racers waiting for me, so who knows?
