Sinapupunan
Brillante Mendoza's film Sinapupunan is set in a town in the south of the Philippines, where old customs still hold sway and most of the people live from fishing and other laborious work. Mendoza depicts the love between a couple, a love that is put to a test since Shakela, the wife, cannot have children. And so, another wife is to be found for Bangas-An, who will bear the child he so desires.
The cinematography and music accompanying the daily happenings in the little town are a feast for both ears and eyes and Mendoza begins and ends the film with the joyous cry of the a new-born child – the quiet sobbing, the regrets, and the abandonment take place in the middle.
Thy Womb (Sinapupunan) (2012) ★★★ dir. Brillante Mendoza
Thy Womb (Sinapupunan) by Brilliante Ma. Mendoza
This recently screened at the Venice Film Festival and apparently got a standing ovation. I saw the trailer during the premiere of Captive and immediately decided that I need to see it once it shows locally (sometime in November, if I'm not mistaken).
Brilliante Mendoza won the Best Director award at 2009 Cannes Film Festival for Kinatay (The Execution of P).
