January 1: Supporting the local movie industry
Today, I saw two movies with my mom; one after the other in fact. I have to note that this is something we've never done before. I marathon movies and TV shows all the time; my mom never does. I think she was bent on maximizing the fact that she doesn't have work tomorrow, while most people do.
The first film we saw was the Best Picture winner in the ongoing Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), a huge commercial success with a story that was probably ripped off from a Chinese film. The second, ironically, was a critically-acclaimed independent film that, as of last Thursday, has been pulled out of 17 theaters due to low ticket sales, despite the fact that it's part of a festival that's still ongoing.
It was interesting to see two completely different movies touching on similar themes in one afternoon. Both are love stories, put in the simplest terms, but each presents its own complexities using entirely distinct styles. Where One More Try explores several intertwining relationships at once, Thy Womb puts just one under the closest of lenses. The former is clearly intended to be a crowd-pleaser, rife with drama and marital woes that have become the cinematic trend these days. The latter is quite the opposite; albeit having its own marital themes, it has none of the melodrama but only a deep, subtle pain that you don't really realize is there until the end.
It's also important to mention the setting--One More Try is set in Manila and it's most significant cultural nuance is a quip about the people of Baguio, while Thy Womb is set in a Badjao village in Tawi-Tawi, complete with intricate banig weaving projects and instances of armed conflict, prompting my mom to ask how a star as big as Nora Aunor didn't get kidnapped during the shooting of this film. (The answer is in the credits, where the filmmakers thank the local government, the Philippine National Police, etc.)
Despite the contrast of the two, and my own preference for the latter, I would still recommend seeing both. Or maybe just one of them, depending on your taste and personal threshold for what my friend Bia calls the "iyakan-sigawan school of acting" and your patience for long silences accompanied by quiet, dignified performances. I think it would be a disservice to yourself to pit them against each other; they are clearly on different planes of movie-making. But that doesn't mean they're not both enjoyable in their own way, or that they won't attract their own audiences.
A lot of people have said a lot things about how the MMFF has devolved into nothing more than a money-making machine. That's sad and mostly true. I'm not even gonna go into the awards they give out, because as Jessica Zafra so aptly puts it, "How can we take seriously an awards show that hands out trophies not just for acting, directing and writing, but for best float and best sex appeal?" And yet these two movies, how different they may be from each other (and how deserved or undeserved the awards they got or didn't get might have been), make me hopeful that maybe the public backlash on MMFF offerings in recent years is steering the festival into the right direction. It's not TIFF, and it's probably never gonna stop being a very successful commercial enterprise, but maybe it wouldn't be so disappointing if people had more choices that don't necessarily compromise quality for box office numbers.
First ever MMFF film I watched, and wouldn't be if it weren't required by my Prof. Focused mainly on the culture and the typical day to day activities of the Badjaos. Not really satisfied with the ending, it was too abrupt. Nora Aunor was great, and so was Bembol Rocco. Made me thankful for the life I have.
MMFF
Nanuod kami kahapon ng mmff movies. Tatlong movies pinanuod namin. Haha. Galing galing. Pagkatapos ng El Presidente, Thy Womb naman. Brillante Mendoza dude! World Class! Wala naman akong masyadong ineexpect. Kaya sobran nagulantang ako. Haha. Hays. Kung papanuorin niyo 'to, abangan niyo yung last scene, sobrang intense lang. Diko makakalimutan yun. Last na movie, Sisterakas.
