TAIPEI 2018
my first attempt at a large format close-up (the flower on the negative is around 1-1.5x the size of the actual flower) with the sinar f2 and a 210mm lens, on 9x12cm fomapan 100 film. the necessary bellows extension for this close-up shot was even longer than i anticipated (around 60cm). the configuration of the camera for this shot is seen in the first picture of this post.
this photo made me realize that a ball-head for the sinar would be useful after all, if i were to make a habit of taking photos like this (which i am currently not planning on). the questionable framing was (at least in part) caused by me giving up.
exposed for 1/125s with a 210mm lens at f22, lit by remote-triggered small flash through a mini-softbox
finally got a "normal" focal length lens (a 150mm symmar f/5.6) on a sinar plate this evening, which means i can actually put together a (presumably) working 4x5" camera setup.
so i unpacked the various camera parts, got my tripod - and started trying to solve that puzzle :)
the sinar f2 camera - as expected - is an intimidating beast. however, it also feels mechanically very satisfying. as a next step i should probably figure out what all the knobs and dials do (about half of them are obvious, the rest confuse me, for now).
sadly, the shutter that came with this lens seems to be in pretty bad condition - worse than i expected from the ebay description. maybe i should look for another 150mm lens ... (or, as i initially planned, stick to 90mm and 360mm focal length and just deal with their bellows requirements).
photographic gear - endgame
so i apparently just bought a sinar f2 off ebay (though no lens yet) ... i'm not sure why, but i guess i'll find out when i have it. and maybe this will eventually lead to some more sanity. or less. who knows.
anyway, this has been quite some time coming, and it already feels good to finally ... get this over with.
