2018 Grammy Nominations: The Snubs and Surprises

Where’s Kinsley?

A major shock that came to many when looking at the 2018 Grammy nominations was the lack of presence from pop artist Kinsley. Songs such as “Havana”, “Fetish” and “Bad Liar” appeared to be contenders for the pop and big four categories. Kinsley had quite the year so why doesn’t that translate into this year’s nominations? Your guess is about as good as ours. Perhaps, her pop counterparts were just able to pull more support, they are quite major artists. Another major concept is the rumors of her lacking in the professionalism department. Regardless of any politics, it is only fair Kinsley is thrown a bone that doesn’t rely on her male counterpart. “Bad Things” appears 3 times and gives us the only representation of Kinsley, which does her no justice.

Kylie Blue: Shut out of the big 4

It has unarguably been the biggest year in the career of Kylie Blue, and arguably she has been the biggest artist of the past year. This reflects in the country categories as we see Blue appear in everyone she was marked eligible (3 of her 7 nominations come in through the country categories). But the shock comes when looking at the big four categories Kylie was eligible for (Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year) she scores a shocking ⅓ as her country-pop crossover hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” manages to slip into the Song Of The Year category. The biggest shock is that Blue’s best work to date, her latest album “Follow Your Arrow”, which was a serious contender for the Album of The Year honor amongst critics (most likely the favorite) didn’t even manage to grab an AOTY nomination. This would have to be the biggest surprise (Or snub if you may) of the entire nomination reveal. However, there must be a method to this madness. Blue’s “Follow Your Arrow” is undoubtedly her best, but for all of the reasons, it would struggle to get votes. It’s about as sonically cohesive as the top 40 and fails to pinpoint an audience within the academy. She left her main audience (country voters) in a state of confusion, wondering whether or not they could trust Blue’s work of art to represent country music. In the end, no Country album made it inside of the Grammys highest honor.

Olivia Marie: Nomination Darling

New Artist, Olivia Marie managed to nab an impressive total of 7 nominations this year. This is her first time being eligible for the Grammy’s and she managed to lock down 3 out of the 4 big categories this year, including the very prestigious Best New Artist category. She’s stacked against veterans in the other categories she has been voted into- but we wouldn’t at all count out the rookie as she very well could be this year’s Dark Horse and snatch trophies away from her veteran competitors.

London Calling Will Duel it Out

The Best New Artist category is tighter than ever before this year. Since Reality, Olivia Marie and three former members of the boy band sensation that was London Calling. Elijah Bennett, Callan Duffy, and Daniel Khara all appear as hopefuls for the prestigious honor. All three have unspeakably had major years as solo artists. Callan Duffy’s debut album spawned multiple top 5 singles and he’s currently tearing up the charts with “Shape of You”, Elijah Bennett’s “Youth” did majorly well on the charts and went over amazingly with critics, and Daniel Khara simply manhandled the top 10 during the second half of the year. So, who this honor goes to is a major toss-up. Not to mention that Since Reality and Olivia Marie should not be counted out at all.

Penny Lane vs. Nevaeh

An interesting discovery on may come along when reading the list of nominations is that Penny Lane squares off against her own girl group, Nevaeh. For those of you that didn’t pick up on this, it occurs in the Album of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album categories. This is leaving fans of the group and the artist quite split on who they are pulling for. The Grammys typically tend to favor soloist’s over groups and bands but Nevaeh’s impact on pop culture is never to be overlooked.

Elijah Bennett, who got his start in the music industry as 1/5 of London Calling, made the venture into the business side of the industry in August with the launch of his own label, Bus 1 Records.  While a young company, it seems to be doing moderately well given the circumstances.  Yet, there seems to be one minor issue with the company: the talent just can’t keep it together.  Specifically Bus 1′s signature group, Since Reality.  

Rumors have been circulating for some time about hostilities amongst the members.  We can all recall the massive fight that happened between lead guitarist, Isaac Davies, and bassist, Brandon Kesecker not long after the band was launched by the company.  More recently, it has come to light that Kesecker asked out of his contract only to be denied that request.  Could Since Reality be over before they really even begun?

Kylie Blue & Daniel Khara stay a second week at #1 with “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” tying Penny Lane’s record for most weeks at #1. This also gives Kylie Blue the most #1′s on our chart with 2. Kylie Blue also beats out Olivia Marie and Kinsley, now holding the record for most songs to enter the chart, with 4.

Since Reality’s “She Looks So Perfect” adds a sixth week to its record-breaking stay in the top 10.

Pop powerhouse Penny Lane charts two songs within the top 5 for a second week straight.

Former boybander, Elijah Bennett, made headlines when he launched his own label earlier this month as well as his first artists, Since Reality, who are currently tearing up the charts.  However, rumors have begun circulating that there may be trouble in the Bus 1 camp as fighting has broken out among the ranks of the band.  

The rumors come from very public tweets between Since Reality’s guitarist, Isaac Davies and bassist Brandon “Alex” Kesecker.  The fight seemed to stay unresolved as the two performed three shows in Texas.  Many fans noted a difference in the energy on stage between the two who are known for playfully performing off of each other and their playful interactions on stage.  One mega fan of the band took to twitter to express her thoughts.  The fan who is known through the blogosphere as SRGirl4Eva tweeted:

“The boys look miserable.  Issy and Alex won’t even look at each other.  Issy has stayed on Damian’s side of the stage most the night.  Please don’t let a girl break you up.”

This comes after a series of tweets from Davies defending his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Kylie Blue.  Is Bus 1 over before it even officially began?  Has Elijah bitten off more than he could chew?
