this couldnโt be real. this had to be some sort of trick of the light or some illusion being cast by some wicked sorceress for some unknown reason. the pirate reached out a hand to touch him, half expecting her hand to go straight through him. instead, her fingers brushed along his arm and proved to her that he was indeed standing before her, as solid and warm as she was. her brow furrowed, blinking rapidly as tears threatened to fill her sky-hued eyes. his words wretched a laugh out of her, taking her by surprise at the suddenness of it. her throat tightened and burned, causing her to swallow thickly.
โhow-?โ why did this surprise her so? she knew better than anyone that humperdinck was a spiteful and evil man so it shouldnโt be so surprising that heโd lied to her about her parentsโ deaths. heโd proven time and time again that he would have done anything to break her spirit, make her more malleable to his wishes and whims.
she wasnโt good with emotional things. her typical reaction to her deep dips of depression was either to take the crew on a particularly spiteful run or bury her sorrows in rum and pretty faces for a few days. she suddenly lunged forward, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug and bury her face in his shoulder. she clung to him like a child instead of like the fearsome pirate that sheโd worked so hard to be. the tears that sheโd worked so hard to keep back finally broke through her defenses, falling down her flushed cheeks.
eventually, she forced herself to pull away from him, suddenly feeling embarrassed at her outburst of emotion. she cleared her throat, wiping at the traitorous tears that soaked her cheeks with a trembling hand. โsorry โbout that,โ she muttered gruffly. โi-iโve justโฆi canโt believe this.โ
