any tips on getting ur music out there?? been working on stuff for years but haven't gotten to really polish anything
I’d recommend covering popular songs related to your genre and adding your own personal touch or twist.
When I first started out, I was making music that was inspired by Lana Del Rey’s types of tracks, so I did a ton of covers of her most popular songs but made them queer. I now have over 1.5 million streams (and counting) on one of my covers I released about 6 months ago and it garnered a LOT of listeners who then went to stream my originals and stayed because it was new yet familiar.
I will say, however, that I’ve shot myself in the foot with this one, as now I’ve built a reputation for being a Lana type musician, when truly what I’ve been wanting to do for years was metal/screamo - I just didn’t have the right tools yet. It’s very easy to pidgeonhole yourself into a niche if you’re not careful. Covering one single artist and only marketing toward that fan base is a recipe for a typecast.
Fortunately, the (albeit small) fan base I’ve gained so far seems pretty enthusiastic about the direction I’m headed, as I also world-build and continue to make sure my presence ascends my music. Every now and then I also release music that’s an entirely different sound to keep people interested and curious on what’s coming.
I used to put hours into researching trends on tiktok in order to create viral videos that were relevant to my genre, and my original Brooklyn Baby Cover ended up going viral on multiple platforms, which started a snowball effect for me. Tiktok is your friend in terms of marketing, as you have the best success rate of virality there. You don’t have to dance or be flashy, but make sure your videos are engaging, aesthetically pleasing, and give the viewer something to take with them before they scroll.
P.S: I’ve never put money into any social media promotion anywhere, but investing in marketing is always a great idea. I definitely would if I had cash to spare.
Hope this helps :)
