Poverty is a strange thing. Poverty is something that nobody likes but few people can get rid of in the end. And poverty is good at hiding, it often occurs and shows up in unexpected places. For most people, each person can only touch the surface of another person and not the real life of another person. And people tend to forget and throw away bad memories and keep good ones. If we go to a small town and we happen to see a Ferrari driving by, we might think the town is rich, but it might be the only Ferrari in town.
Speaking of this, I have to remember the story about Puerto Rico that I told in class. Many people have a very good impression of Puerto Rico because of its beautiful coastline and beautiful scenery. When you talk to puerto Ricans, you realize that the beautiful coastline has nothing to do with the daily lives of Puerto Ricans. The places tourists go and the places Puerto Ricans live are very different. The locals live in poor, run-down areas, but the scenic and coastal areas have been renovated to extraordinary luxury.
The beautiful coastline is also the dream and sorrow of Puerto Rico, which relies heavily on tourism for its economy, but only tourism for Puerto Rico. This is the economic model that Puerto Rico's geography has created, the poor geopolitics have created that Puerto Rico will never have anything but tourism. Sadly, tourism alone is not enough to support the prosperity of all Puerto Ricans.
