Sinking Ponds Dig Yields Archeological Artifacts
Excavations at Sinking Ponds in the summer of 2011 unearthed a good deal of evidence regarding the site's former inhabitants, Dr. Douglas Perrelli of the University at Buffalo Anthropology Department told the East Aurora Village Board on Nov. 21. In the early 1960s, Joseph Granger was the first person to lead archaeological excavations of Sinking Ponds. Dr. Granger identified the area as “a seasonal base camp for the Meadowwood culture,” Perrelli said. This summer, 14 undergraduate and one graduate student intern performed excavations over the course of six weeks at Sinking Ponds. Their findings indicate that the site may have had human inhabitants much earlier than previously believed, Perrelli noted. He added that the composition of the site suggests that some impressive prehistoric creatures might have once disturbed the now tranquil site. “There are probably [the remains of] Mastodons in the pond,” Perrelli said.
