The Majority of Christians Don’t Follow The Bible
This is one argument as to why Christianity may not be compatible with modern life and thinking. Many of their teachings are outdated, and I think on some level most Christians believe that to be true. That’s why they try to compromise and make justifications about certain things. Here’s the thing though, one of the most important foundations involve following the scriptures. As a result few of the people in today’s world are actually Christians. They are more like the Pharisees in Judaism who think they’re Jews because they follow most of the Bible’s teachings.
Now, many people like the use the same argument when pointing out hypocritical Christians, such as eating shell fish and getting tattoos. What many fail to realize is that many of those laws are in the Old Testament. While it’s part of the Bible, it basically tells the origin of Christians and not every law in the Old Testament is relevant. In a nutshell Old Testament is the Jewish bible while New Testament is Christian. Christians use it as a reference for where they come from and what led to Christianity. Meanwhile the Jewish bible (the Torah) is basically just the Old Testament.
A Christian following the laws of the Old Testament would be practicing Judaism, not Christianity. In today’s world the main areas modern Christians appear to not follow is to be loving and non-judgmental. They preach hate and call people out for not following the Bible or just for being different. Christians should not follow the laws of man and yet they frequently get involved with a political angle, even though many should be impartial.
Two of the most common laws in the Bible rarely followed involve becoming a Christian and Marriage. Most Christians believe the Sinner’s Prayer is the most important and only step to becoming a Christian. Based on the bible however repentance is only the first step. Baptism is the final step and is what is considered truly important. For some reason, most churches do not follow this. I’m not sure what’s so controversial about a baptism (you’re basically being bathed in water) but churches consider baptism as an optional and personal choice.
The only justification I can see is that they’re basically admitting they were wrong and all those who became Christian and were never baptized were condemned to hell upon death. I agree that’s harsh especially if the person lived a good life but here’s the thing: the bible is known for being harsh and black and white on it’s rules. There’s no compromise or gray areas. Which goes back to me saying Christianity isn’t compatible with modern life. Most churches try to reinterpret this believe because they (rightly) view it as harsh but you can’t pick and choose on how the scriptures are interpreted. If you’re truly a Christian you follow all the rules or nothing.
These compromises are extended to marriage. People have pre-marital sex all the time. In fact most churches dismiss it almost as a right of passage that the youth experience until they eventually mature and get married. They may be called out on it but it’s generally considered acceptable. Then they eventually get married, and then divorced. Divorce is more acceptable even in modern churches. Although according to the bible only death and adultery are justifications for separating. Ironically if you get married to another person you’re committing adultery which probably invalidates the original marriage.
Now extend these same compromises to someone attracted to the same-sex and all hell breaks loose. Forget about getting married, if you so much as sleep with the same gender you’re judged and condemned. What most people don’t realize is that all sins carry the same weight. A same-sex relationship is just as bad as a hetero one before marriage, or even murder. All can send you to hell. Which is why I don’t understand why so me people who are Christians continue to bother.
It’s fine to believe in God, but do it right. Otherwise you’re wasting you’re time thinking you’re getting into heaven. If you’d rather justify certain scriptures over another and can’t accept the truth of the bible then maybe you should find another religion or give it up entirely. There’s no compromise when it comes to being a Christian.
