He barely looked up from his scroll as he was brought in, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of getting the impression that he was still important. No, he kept on reading for a while, until he had come to the end of the chapter, then carefully rolled up the scroll and put it aside. He finally looked up then, straight through the man that was made to kneel on the ground, clad in the traditional robes of a Kou concubine, just to humiliate him a little more. Kouen was sure that he would have done the same in return, but for now it didn’t matter anyway. He looked only at the guard, letting him explain that they had brought the High King of the Seven Seas, Sinbad, before him today, just like he had commanded it. He listened, even though of course he knew what was going on. Once the guards were done he nodded, dismissing them with a wave so they were left alone, apart from that one obligatory guard that remained in front of the door, in case the man in chains and woman’s clothes would try to make a run for it.
Kouen smiled to himself and went back to reading his scrolls for a while, letting the other taste more of his humiliation. When he finally looked up at him, he just looked him up and down once and gave him a small smile. “Would you like a pillow to kneel on? You look uncomfortable there... Sinbad.”
