this might be kind of weird but what are your opinions on this whole "im a sinner" meme/joke thats been going on for a while? i fully understand that its only a joke but it still makes me kind of go :/. is this normal or am i taking this too seriously?

Hey there! I honestly don’t bat an eye when I see those “sinning” jokes on here unless they are specifically about being LGBT or liking gay characters -- then I definitely cringe.

For instance, when I see someone tag fanart of two female characters holding hands with “haha look at them sin” or someone writing “i’m going to go wallow in sin by reading about two guys kiss” it makes me super uncomfortable. I would never call out someone who is LGBT themselves for saying it, because they have the right to reclaim that sort of language used against them (the notion that same-sex activity, etc. is sin) if they so choose, but it is definitely Not Okay for someone straight or cis to use that wording about LGBT people or relationships. Too often are we told in all seriousness that we are sinning just for being who we are -- it’s not an appropriate joke for a cis straight person to make.

Now, when it’s just one of those sort of nonsensical sin memes, i just sorta snort and scroll on. After all, Christianity (in many countries, at least) is a privileged position; if they take one of our terms and use it for a laugh, it’s not oppressing anyone. And let’s be real, the way some Christians treat sinning -- behaving as if it isn’t something we all fall into or that certain “levels” of sin earn one automatic damnation (which is not at all true, come on people, did you open your Bible) or can make God hate you -- can be much more harmful than some kids on tumblr coming up with puns like “synchronized sinning.”

All that being said, any reaction you have to these memes is totally valid -- if they make you uncomfortable, most of them are text posts and thus can be avoided by downloading x-kit or tumblr savior and blacklisting “sin”!
