Ahhhhh quick you say?? Umm not sure if I can do quick but I’ll try!!

My school attends Hong Ik, which is for the local states/area. It goes on all day, starting at 8am with group music form/pom se competitions (which I’m always in for out school, but I am also a certified judge/referee so staff like me get there at like 7). 

After that it’s obstacle course competition for the younger kids, and then it starts the individual competition. Competitors are grouped by age and sex and belt rank starting from lower belts (yellow belt boys or girls 10-13 are first, then orange and so on). Black belts and adults compete later on in the day/afternoon.

Participants can sign up to compete in board breaking, form/pom se, sparring or any combination of the three. Medals are rewarded to everyone based on the judging and scores (we don’t let anyone go home empty-handed, they get bronze at the very least cuz they did have to pay for this after all).

Overall it’s a very crazy hectic day, especially for volunteer staff like myself. We’re there in the chaos from 7am to 5pm trying to figure out which kids go to which ring, trying to pacify upset parents who showed up late or missed their kids’ call, trying to stay in our lane and follow the rules when consternated masters come by coaching their students (which is illegal) and get to yelling and cursing us out in Korean cuz what do we know. That sort of thing.

But I’ve been doing it for years. When it comes with the territory you get used to it.

You also see a lot of amazing stuff though. Insane breakings, jumping off boxes or other people halfway to the ceiling, blindfolded breakings, breakings with firecrackers/confetti, super well-organized and timed group music/family forms, really epic sparring matches... and overall it’s just a great experience and a good day’s work.
