Opened this 1986 Merlot from Sinskey Vineyards in Napa Valley - magnum size. What a great wine and showing great even after 33 years. No noticeable oxidation. Nice dark color, dark fruit on the nose, and on the palate still luscious texture and bursting with fruit and acidity. I had a taste of 1994 Pinot Noir from Robert Sinskey Vineyards recently at a pick-up party - magnum sized. It was sublime! So I bought a bottle and opened it for the holiday season and ...meh. For a 25-year old wine, it was not overly oxidized and the color was still vibrant. There was plenty of fruit left ...but it didn’t come across as a Carneros Pinot. Either on the nose or the palate. I couldn’t have called this Pinot in a blind tasting and even knowing what it was, I struggled to find Pinot. It tasted like a generic red wine. I’m wondering whether I should have decanted longer? Or if I did something incorrect.
