Presentation on cognitive load
The “Psychology department” was asked to present to the school’s teaching faculty on the topic of: “neuroscience and the teenage brain.” We took the opportunity to address cognitive load theory. Our Google slides are here, and embedded below:
We did record one session; I make no guarantee as to the video quality.
And feedback was sought from the faculty, at the time of this post, only 23 comments were shared:
Enjoyed learning about how memories are formed and stored. Eric and Yosup are great teachers!
How to deal with cognitive load by being thoughtful with our handouts, canvas page and presentations
I think our time was shorter, which is fine, but I appreciated the practical information, and would love to see/hear about lessons or activities people created that are more pedagogically sound as they pay attention to “bottleneck”/distraction/etc
I would love more opportunities to learn from colleagues. I wish that the session I had been in had not been the 10 min cut one. Would loved to have heard more from them.
Interesting! Solid reminders of how we learn and best practices. Thank you both!
Very helpful!!! Thank you! Any book recommendations or podcasts for more info?
I need to slow down and allow for processing.
I appreciated some direct feedback about how to minimize the cognitive load as well as the practice of getting feedback for our Canvas pages from colleagues.
I appreciate the time shared by Eric and Yosup. Cognitive load isn’t just important for our students. It is also important for us as the adults in the room with special attention given to our self care.
Useful and applicable. Solid takeaways I can use tomorrow! Excellent!!
Thank you so much! Very informative and good adapting to new schedule.
Bringing in more recall after 24 hours to activate long term memory Be conscious of what is considered noise vs. signal on worksheet or canvas
Great presentation! Students need to be given less and need more down time.
How the brain functions and works is something that I do appreciate and enjoy learning about. I thought Eric did a good job presenting a few things that we can easily take away from our time - how much the brain (especially the teenage brain) has to function to manage all they have going on. … [REDACTED because it's not a comment about me/ mine to share].
Great use of demo to get people involved. I want more info in this area.
Minimize noise for students. This might have been my favorite presentation of the day. Thanks!
This was great and I learned!
Finding the right cognitive load was interesting. I found the “signal” and “noise” references helpful.
I loved it! I realized I need to make handouts clearer and directions more clear.
Pause more! (me, not you)
Yosup and Eric — appreciate your efforts! Helped remind me to slow down and be more attentive to the many sources of inattentiveness!
Castro is a phenomenal teacher. So great to see him in action! Very helpful and practical advice for structuring lessons and assignments.
Great session. Interesting and practical. Just wish we had more time with this topic. Thank you very much!
