His SMG fell to his side, the red and black color scheme being Jack’s way of honoring Tassiter. At least, that’s what Timothy figured- had the CEO wanted to, he could have easily placed a mass recall on any weapons lacking yellow on their frame. 

The Digistruct Age, right? 

“It was a, uhhhh- ‘body double program.’ They taught me the basic point-and-shoot strategy, how to not take a million years to reload... Running. That sorta thing. The rest I learned while I was on the job.”

    He tries to draw breath between piano keys, his hands clutching at the thin fabric of his shirt.

    Stones break the skin on his back and rub raw against stretched flesh; a growl catches deep with his throat and vibrates through his chest. The point of contact aches between his ribs; elbow against muscle forcing the air from his lungs.

    Light boots on dirt prickle his ears, eyes narrowing at the white silhouette looming over him. His heart thuds violently against bone, his head jerking back as she lowers herself over him.

   The lack of oxygen makes it impossible to gather enough saliva to spit at his offender; instead he’s trapped between earth and body, eyes beginning to water slightly as she yanks him closer.

  Instinctively he clamps his hands on her body; behind her knee and neck, fingers digging deep into soft skin and sliver strands before yanking her back, attempting to knock her off balance.

No. She doesn’t. Funnily enough, though, she’s never lost sleep over that particular revelation.

She can’t pinpoint a moment exactly when she came to terms with knowing things wouldn’t end well for her. Certainly, it took her much longer than it took Tannis to understand that Pandora would be her undoing, but as a rational person, she made her peace with it long ago.

The attack that robbed her of her arm and scarred her face could easily have ended her life. It didn’t. Since then, she’s learned to make the best of what she’s got - there isn’t much point in making oneself miserable over what might’ve been when one still has to deal with what is.

By the time they lost Old Haven, she lost her husband, Dahl withdrew and left behind their criminal labourers, and Atlas pressed a fresh assault, she was old hand at dealing with hardship. Realistically, she understood quite early that the odds were stacked against her. Still, she’s never been one to wither under pressure, and she’ll be damned if she lays down and dies when there’s still a job that needs doing.

Long before Jack caught up with her, she knew she wouldn’t get out of this alive. What mattered to her was that she made the most of the time she had left.

“Give me one reason I shouldn’t shoot you.”

“Let me make myself perfectly clear, Commandant.”

Though the set of her gloved prosthetic on her hip is casual, there’s no softness in her face, in the eye as bright and intense as a hawk’s. Her shoulders are squared, her breathing regular, unfazed by the threat of guns trained on her.

“You are not dealing with Smoot anymore. New Haven is under my protection. If you insist on this asinine pursuit of a Vault, so be it, but you will not touch my city.”

A pause. Her lips press into a grim line; her gaze, defiant, never wavers. “Shoot me if you must, Steele. I was not the only sharpshooter to make it out of Haven. If you pull that trigger, I promise you, your benefactors will be collecting you from this planet in a bucket. I’m through playing games with you.”

I cannot give you something that does not exist. Nor will I permit you to rob these people of their lives for want of some bloody legend.”
