Lily hurriedly left her bed, not bothering to wash up or carefully pick out her outfit like usual. Instead, she grabbed yesterday's uniform, pulled her shoes on, and quietly left her dorm to not disturb her sleeping roommates anymore than she had already done in her hurry to leave.
She practically ran down the stairs, almost slipping over on her way to the hall. But she made it unscathed and pushed the great hall's doors open with more flurry than she meant to.
Her eyes instantly found James Potter. He was sitting in his usual place at the gryffindor table, one of the only students eating breakfast at this ungodly hour.
His eyes found hers at much the same time, and a grin fell onto his lips.
"Morning, Lily", he spoke as soon as she walked over, "Uh, what's with the hair? I know I look dashing with my messy, bed hair look but it's not fitting for everyone, you know?"
She glared at him before taking a seat across and folding her arms.
"I was in a hurry to get down here."
"So I'm not your style inspiration?"
Lily huffed, ignoring his question, "I have a bone to pick with you, Potter?"
James' grin dwindled, "Potter? Thought we were past that now?"
Lily sighed, banging her head against the table rather dramatically.
"At Sirius, which is basically the same thing as being annoyed at you, I suppose."
Her words were muffled against the wood, but James seemed to understand as he nodded, poking her head before speaking.
"And why are you annoyed at Sirius and, by association, me?"
Lily glanced up to him, bright green eyes glaring at him.
"Sirius is your best friend?"
"Right", James matched her glare, "And why in Merlin's name is that a thing to be annoyed at him for? He's a great best friend."
"I know that", Lily rolled her eyes, "But I'm a competitive person, as you well know."
"So", she huffed again, "If Sirius is my best friend, then that means I'm competiting for him with you! And guess who is and will always be winning that? You! Why couldn't you just have him! I'll go be best friends with Marlene!"
James laughed, "Well you wouldn't win that one either, she's been cozying up with Dorcas Meadowes lately."
Lily sighed, resting her head against her hand, "I'm perpetually losing."
"Why can't we just share?"
"Because you're just as competitive, if not more, than me, and you know it."
James grinned, "Hm, true. Guess you're stuck losing to me then."
"Great", Lily glared at him once again.
"Are you going through some sort of crisis, Evans?" A voice barked in laughter behind her.
She turned around to change the object of her glaring.
"Jeez", Sirius laughed again, taking a seat next to her, "Just a joke."
Sirus blinked, turning to James to look for an answer.
James grinned, "She's realised you're her best friend and is very upset that she isn't yours."
"That's a stupid thing to be annoyed about."
"You're such a git", Lily turned away from him, grabbing an orange from the fruit bowl.
Sirius rolled his eyes, "It's stupid because you are mine too."
Sirius' smirked as he glanced between James and Lily, the same bewildered look on both their faces.
"You know people refer to me and James as this joint entity?"
Lily nodded, "It's always 'James&Sirius'."
"Right", he leaned back in his seat, "But that's not the only joint entity that exists."
"What's the other?" Both James and Lily leaned forwards, curious, and spoke at the same time.
Sirius let out another laugh as he spoke, "It may be more recent, but I think we're going to be hearing a lot more 'Lily&James'."
"Us?" The two spoke again, glancing to each other.
Sirius gave a firm nod, "Right. So really, it's rather impossible to pick between Lily&James, just as much as it is between James&Sirius."
"I'm my own person, Sirius."
"Doesn't mean you can't also be intrinsically connected and irremovable to another person."
James seemed to have a rather red tint to his cheeks as his spoke, "And that's me and Lily?"
Sirius shrugged, rather nonchantly when Lily&James seemed to be half way to a panic attack.
