Em 20 de março de 1915 nascia Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a verdadeira mãe do rock.

Misturando solos de guitarra e música gospel, Sister Rosetta contribui com a criação da música do século XX. Filha de uma pastora evangélica, Sister Rosetta era uma das poucas mulheres negras que tocavam guitarra na década de 20, mas isso não impediu que seu trabalho ficasse extremamente popular e que ela também colocasse o estilo gospel em evidência.

Na década seguinte, foi para o topo das paradas com vários sucessos como “Rock Me” e “Tall Skinny Papa”. Para se ter uma ideia da magnitude do seu trabalho, Sister Rosetta era a inspiração assumida dos grandes nomes do rock como Elvis Presley, B.B King , Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Etta Jones, Johnny Cash e Little Richard.

Sister Rosetta nunca foi reconhecida oficialmente como a mãe do rock, mas entrou para o Blues Hall of Fame em 2007, e em 2008 o até então governador da Pensilvânia, Edward Rendell, declarou o dia 11 de Janeiro como o Dia de Sister Rosetta Tharpe em todo o estado. Acrescente mais este nome na sua lista de "Mulheres que Fizeram História". E sim, amigos, a mãe do Rock N' Roll é preta. ❤️🎸

Resumindo, Sister Rosetta foi quem criou o que hoje conhecemos como rock n roll, mas ela não ficou conhecida, e nem levou esse título porque era uma mulher, negra e filha de escravos.⠀

This cheap-o edition with its iffy, thin fidelity is just fantastic when Sister Rosetta unleashes her fevered, enthusiastic, insistent, grinning (it’s like you can hear her grin) singing. And her rocking guitar! I have to assume she’s singing and playing at the same time, this being such a low-tech-sounding recording. The Amazing Sister Rosetta.
