The Dunedain were different from how he had imagined them to be. When his father had spoken about them, Legolas had always somehow pictured them akin to the Lake-Town dwellers, with rough gestures and hard lives, rebellious and stubborn, but in a hidden way. They would navigate over the hidden trail ways in the forests of Imladris like the lake-men followed the currents and streams on the great lake, and gather the prey likes fishes. How could he have imagined them to be otherwise? He had only rarely visited even Lake-Town, let alone mingle with other races of mankind. How could he have created an imagine in his mind of something that was so different and yet so familiar?
Still, he should have known. The elves of Imladris were not the same as his own people, even though they looked the same to strangers. Surely these hardy men, descendants of a once noble people, but fallen into ruin, could not resemble the fishers and bargemen, spending their lives on boats and wooden ways? They had a certain bearing around them that the lake-men lacked, a kind of nobility and wisdom, a knowledge of dark and light things that had happened in this world, of history and fell deeds. Their eyes were old, even those of the youngest ones.
Legolas liked them. Though they were suspicious folk who hid their true feelings behind jests and casual remarks, they treated him with respect, though not yet as one of their own. If time had permitted it, he would have stayed among them longer - but he had a challenge, and he could not linger. There was one man he had to seen, and finally he had found him. Though no one had invited him, Legolas walked over to a fire at the edges of the camp, where a lone figure was sitting almost motionlessly, and sat down, folding his legs between him. His sharp eyes followed the smoke of the half-lit pipe.
--- “My people say that creating shadows, is to invite the shadows.”

His father would not be happy with this. Ever since Smaug had conquered the mountain, Thranduil had beseeched his son never to go even near his lair. He had faced the serpents of the North, he had said, and this was not a foe the elves could take on, not even a gifted archer as Legolas - and yet that was exactly where the young elf found himself now.
Oh, his father would not be happy. Valar, he would be furious! But could he truly leave the necklace, the only palpable memory of his mother, left to be corrupted by the dragon’s foul breath? He had to bring if back, even if he had to turn over every single gold piece in this rock.
Just as the thought had crossed his mind that that was exactly what he might have to do, Legolas slipped over a piece of treasure, and he held his breath, praying to the Valar Smaug was still sleeping.

He should have listened to Estel. Frodo’s fate had no longer been in their hands. He should have let him go, and followed his friend to aid Merry and Pippin, so cruelly stolen away from them - but he hadn’t. He had been too proud. Loyalty he had only sworn to Frodo, and thus he had turned his back to Estel, and had crossed the river to follow the Ring-Bearer... and had been taken prisoner by the dark forces on the other shore. It seemed elves were too known to tread corrupted lands unnoticed.
Now it was all forsaken. Bound like a dog, he was brought to a fiery, shadowed hall and thrown on his knees, where he was sitting now, his head bowed and his heart hammering, waiting for the events to unfold.

If someone were to ask him whether he liked the city, Legolas would have found himself faced with a dilemma. He could forsake the elven laws and lie, praising the high walls and stone fountains and the chaos. He could speak the truth, and point out the penetrating smells and the overwhelming sounds and the many suspicious glares he had received. Neither of the two courses would benefit him - the one would make him lie, the other would gain him the disapproval of the proud inhabitants.
Luckily, during his trip to the halls of healing, none asked him the question, and thus he reached the quiet buildings relatively unscathed. When he entered, his eyes fell on the girl that might fit the description.
--- “My lady? Maya?”

The Valar had warned him. They had warned him clearly enough, but his pride had prevented him from seeing it. He was not invincible, even though he had thought he was. The arrow had made an end to that illusion.
Cringing his teeth, Legolas let himself sag against one of the ruined walls of the Ravenhill, his hand pressed against his wound. He should perhaps see a healer - but where were his kin? Did he have to go down all the way to Dale? No doubt the wounded mortals would need aid more than he did. Tiredly, he closed his eyes.

He was happy the man had decided to come with him. Well, maybe ‘decided’ gave him too much credit. He had not let him much of a choice honestly - unless one could barging in and claiming that he needed a boat and Bard needed a day out of his duties, and that they could combine those too marvelously, and that they would leave now, no, not tomorrow, now, call a choice.
However, the bargeman had not protested too much, Legolas thought to himself as he was peering through the morning mist. Did he see a shade there? Yes... One of the guard towers - burnt and black, but still standing tall. The elf would have called out a warning, but he was certain the man had seen it as well. After all, he had been bred upon these waters. He would bring them safely into the ruined city center - and he did. Setting foot on the quay, Legolas was careful to step on secure paths, and oriented himself briefly.
“This way! I think...”

How foolish he had been. Now, now that he was sunk into the bed, covered beneath warm blankets, even though he was too tired to even feel them anymore, his mind wandered back to the fatal battle, analyzing every moment, every movement, altering the smallest details and watch how different the outcome would have been - sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
It didn’t matter anymore now. The battle was fought and the battle was won, but there had been a price to pay. The spirits of the forest had demanded the life of the prince, and thus it would come to pass. Quietly, Legolas was laying in a darkened room, and waited for the end.
