the stars are alive whether you believe it or not.
they come from the galaxy cauldron, which is known as the birthplace of the stars. it is there that they are formed before being released into the universe; and it is there they return to die when their allotted time has run out.
within the galaxy cauldron is a trio of sister stars: the allotter, the spinner, and the unturnable. they have a hand in forming the stars born in the cauldron, granting them purpose, and helping them die out to be reborn as a new star. this is something they have been doing since the beginning of time.
but then a fluke occurred. a star didn't make it home to the galaxy cauldron when it was fated to die. it wasn't until four stars didn't return that the sister stars realized something was wrong.
that something was chaos.
chaos had only ever existed on the fringes of the universe, the embodiment of nothingness. it had been around since the dawn of time, its darkness kept at bay by the light of the stars churned out by the galaxy cauldron. chaos wasn't a star, and perhaps that is where the problem began.
starlight attracted chaos. the bright light flickering with power -- chaos could never replicate that. powerful stars -- ones full of life and just starting their journey -- couldn't be touched by chaos. but fading stars -- stars that were reaching the end of their days, could. chaos consumed one, perhaps hopeful that by doing so it would take on the shine and power of the star as its own. and in a way it did. chaos was able to take on the power, though only for a short time. dying stars had so little power left in them; consuming them only meant they would not return to the galaxy cauldron to be reborn.
so chaos began to consume more stars. with each new star it consumed, the more it craved the power the star possessed. it gave chaos a sense of life; a sense of being.
and it troubled the sister stars.
because chaos wasn't a star, it couldn't be controlled like a star. but if it kept consuming stars rather than letting them be reborn, the balance of the universe would begin to tilt. and the stars couldn't have that.
to assuage chaos, the spinner promised chaos a star of its own. it was a shortsighted promise; the spinner thought chaos merely wanted a star to light up the void it dwelt in. so the spinner created a star shell -- essentially a star without any power attached. it would sparkle and shine, never dimming; but it also wasn't a star.
the spinner meant well, but chaos was offended, and angered. and in its fury it began to consume stars left and right, extending its reach across the universe. no star or planet stood a chance. so the sister stars were forced to take drastic measures by creating a star crystal so powerful and bright, that it drove chaos back to the edge of the universe.
and for several millennia that was where chaos stayed, slightly forgotten. but in its time away, chaos has been consuming stars -- ones just born, and brimming with power. and chaos has fed off that power, making itself more powerful, and more dangerous. as it grows in power, the universe begins to grow smaller, and darker.
despite their power together, the sister stars know they cannot stand up to chaos a second time. they had put their own powers into the star crystal to drive it away before, leaving themselves weaker. they knew that in order to banish chaos again they would need to find another source to defeat it.
the spinner suggested the mortals of earth, having spent the better part of their origin watching them evolve into the group they are today. but mortals had no powers of their own. so the allotter began to craft new stars of power in the galaxy cauldron, melding multiples into one, and making them more powerful than any other star that had been created before.
but the unturnable did not trust mortals enough to award these new stars of power to just one. history had shown time and time again that mortals were fickle when it came to power -- they could be corrupted, and a corrupted mortal housing a star of power would be just as dangerous as allowing chaos to consume that star itself. so the unturnable took these new stars and broke them into smaller pieces, intending to spread the stars into multiple hosts until a truly worthy mortal showed they could be trusted with such a powerful star.
and that is where we are today. the sister stars are seeking mortals capable of using the stars of power to fight evil, and drive chaos back to where it belongs... so long as chaos doesn't taint them first.
