What to Prefer? Sitefinity or SharePoint
Every company, irrespective of its size needs a portal to highlight the products and services to their targeted customers. If you are a technology oriented company delivering software or hardware solutions or even an online retailer, then any static site is inadequate for your growing business. During ten years of creating websites, I have managed various projects by using different CMS platforms that satisfy unique needs of the business. CMS actually provides reusable templates and reduces the time needed to post serialized content. So which system is great for you?
In this blog, I will discuss two platforms Sitefinity and SharePoint and find which is more useful for your business website.
Web development is now a competitive business and Sitefinity or SharePoint developers are well aware of the fact that they need to offer something premium to the site owners to convince them to shell out some money.
One very popular paid CMS is Sitefinity, but if you are looking for something that is free then SharePoint is a good option.
Sitefinity is based on standard ASP.Net and any developer having knowledge of ASP.Net can work with it. It is popular among developers for its scalability, easy to use features and integrations.
SharePoint is a browser based collaboration, CMS and extensible platform from Microsoft that comes with its own set of tool that helps the organization share, store and access information easily.
When the management endorses SharePoint, they think that it’s a one stop shop for all content requirements, but in reality it falls short in many areas. When it comes to customizing your project, it is extremely hard and may become a nightmarish ride. It is designed for specific situations rather than an all around web CMS. It is a way to manage documents which according to me is a totally different feature from what Sitefinity development offers.
Though selecting a CMS basically depends on what your site actually needs, but if you want a general CMS with various modules and extensions and interesting functionalities with limitless designs and produces XHTML output, then Sitefinity is the best choice.
So, when should you choose SharePoint application development? It is more suitable in an intranet scenario where there are multiple users who need to collaborate with each other on documents and need software to manage them.
From the developer’s point of view, Sitefinity performs very well as a web CMS and it is not so huge. Developers can easily understand the system and create new modules, templates and controls quickly, but on the other hand SharePoint developers find it difficult to customize it easily and spend weeks through the documentation or they need to hire some consultant.
Thus, in a nutshell, I would suggest Sitefinity for its great and easy to use features, but if a business requires good collaboration and sharing of immense data within the company, then SharePoint may be your choice.
