The baby’s just stopped crying. Mando keeps rocking him from side to side, though; sometimes if he stops too early, it makes the kid burst into tears again.
They’re standing on the little cliff overlooking the desert, Mando having gone there as he walked to calm the Child down. From this distance, he can’t hear it. But it pulses and shimmers in the sky, and he’s been close more than enough times to be able to imagine the noises it makes. He stands there a while watching the Zero Point, knowing that someone else is on duty but unable to help himself nevertheless. He doesn’t understand it. But, frankly, he’s not sure he really cares enough to.
“Let’s go home, ad’ika,” he says gently, but by then the Child’s started to snooze, his cheek smushed up against Mando’s cuirass. He doesn’t mind much, though.
Mando nearly misses it on his way down from the cliff. The movement. The slight flutter of a cloak.
But with the baby in his left arm, he swiftly pulls his blaster out with his right and aims at a particularly skinny tree. His helm turns, his visor unflinching.
If he shoots, the rest of the Order’s guards will come running from their patrol. (Mando never misses, though.)
“Show yourself.”
