Fifty-seven years ago yesterday, African American college students Ezell A. Blair, Jr. (now Jibreel Khazan), Franklin E. McCain, Joseph A. McNeil, and David L. Richmond sat down at Woolworth’s lunch counter in downtown Greensboro, NC as a deliberate action to challenge the policy of segregation and thus began the Greensboro sit-in. Other students and members of the community later joined them in peaceful resistance, enduring heckling and for some in April, temporary arrest. The Greensboro sit-in sparked others around the country. Almost six long months later, on July 26, Woolworth’s desegregated.
